Anybody notice anything wrong with Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett coming out of last week’s game? Neither did we, so it was a surprise when he didn’t practice today.
Burnett apparently has an injured calf. The good news is it doesn’t sound too serious.
“Going through a workout and all three looked like they were moving pretty good. I don’t have high concern, but they’re working through those injuries,” coach Mike McCarthy said after practice.
The other two guys McCarthy was referring to are defensive end Datone Jones, who hasn’t played in two weeks because of an ankle sprain, and running back James Starks, who left the Carolina game with an ankle sprain.
Neither of those guys were surprises on the DNP ledger today, though.
While we doubt Burnett will miss any time — and there was a time when we wished he WOULD miss substantial time — the Packers are clearly well-stocked at safety if Burnett does require some rest. In addition to future star Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and the improving Micah Hyde, Sean Richardson has also shown he can hold his own.
The Packers’ biggest weakness from a year ago is a team strength right now.
And speaking of strengths, cornerback Sam Shields didn’t practice on Wednesday either. That is no surprise, since Shields injured his knee against Miami and missed last week’s game.
There is a chance Shields will play this Sunday.
