Through the first week of training camp, some players the Green Bay Packers were counting on to make contributions in 2014 were looking a lot like something that was squeezed out of the back of a dog. Center J.C. Tretter, who most expect to start, was the most troubling, but second-round pick Davante Adams had been pretty much invisible as well.
Well, those guys are just slow starters. They’re straight up kicking ass now!
Or at least they’re looking like the serviceable players we expected them to be.
Tretter was getting dominated in one-on-one drills early in camp, but he’s turned the tables this week. Lately, he’s been handling B.J. Raji, Josh Boyd and even Mike Daniels in drills.
In other words, maybe this guy CAN be the Packers starting center this season and not get the franchise killed.
Adams, on the other hand, was quiet at the start of camp. Unlike an offensive lineman, who you don’t want to hear anything about because that means he’s fucking something up, you want to hear about receivers. They’re playmakers so you want to hear about them making plays.
And Adams? Nothing.
We’ve started to hear more about Adams this week, though.
He’s made enough plays that he appears to now be in the conversation for the No. 3 receiver spot. Another way to look at it might be that Jarrett Boykin has failed to make enough plays to create any separation.
Either way, Adams has a chance to earn a pretty sizable role as a rookie and that’s exactly what a second-round pick should do.
With Tretter, the news is cause for relief. The Packers only pay lip service to competition for starting spots and it’s pretty obvious now that all of those guys were chosen before camp even started. Remember Allen Barbre? Yeah, that could have happened again.
With Adams, maybe it’s somewhat of a relief too. We all wondered what the hell Big Ted was doing picking a receiver in the second round. If he’s a legit contributor as a rookie, then we have our answer.
What I hear is that Boykin is turning into Clifford Franklin.
Or Finley…
But he is wirrrry. How’s it going in Russia Ivom?
LMAO!!! I now have that interview scene from the replacements playing through my head….
Boykin isnt flashy but on Sundays he will be out there making plays. Id be surprised if Adams passes up Boykin on the depth chart. Ill definitely be drafting him in the 9th or so depending on my situation.
