A while back, Travel Wisconsin released their Wizard of Oz-themed TV spot with Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson. That spot was directed by Airplane! director Jerry Zucker.
Now they have another commercial out. The new one features Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played Murdock, and Robert Hays, who played Ted Striker, in Airplane!
The new spot is also directed by Jerry Zucker and his brother David apparently helped out. It’s Airplane! themed, obviously, which is awesome.
Ironically, Kareem utters the line, “I can’t believe I ever left this place.” Ironic because Kareem forced the Bucks to trade him back in the day because the Midwest didn’t meet his needs as a Muslim. That turned out to be one of the worst trades of all time. The Bucks got four players, all of whom were garbage.
The Lakers got the NBA’s all-time point scorer for 14 seasons.
Anyway, you can probably imagine how we feel about Kareem.
So, back to the commercial. Otto Pilot also makes an appearance toward the end. That’s him with Jordy up above. Why? No idea in hell.
Why not?
elephantitus of the hand much?
Holy shit I pray Otto doesn’t deflate like he has been known to do and Jordy has to blow him up.
Don’t let Otto get too close to the Packer’s defense – they suck.
Awesome! Particularly for those of us that have seen the original movie so many times….
I’m pretty sure that Junior Bridgeman and Brian Winters, both of whom had their numbers retired by the Bucks after their careers, would probably argue that the term ‘garbage’ to describe them is a little harsh. Kareem they ain’t, but garbage?
Stick with football.
Joey: Wait a minute. I know you. You’re Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Roger Murdock: I’m sorry, son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I’m the co-pilot.
Joey: You are Kareem! I’ve seen you play. My dad’s got season tickets.
Roger Murdock: I think you should go back to your seat now, Joey. Right, Clarence?
Captain Oveur: Nahhhhhh, he’s not bothering anyone. Let him stay here.
Roger Murdock: But just remember, my name is…
[showing his nametag]
Roger Murdock: ROGER MURDOCK. I’m an airline pilot.
Joey: I think you’re the greatest, but my dad says you don’t work hard enough on defense.
[Kareem gets angry]
Joey: And he says that lots of times, you don’t even run down court. And that you don’t really try… except during the playoffs.
Roger Murdock: [breaking character] The hell I don’t! LISTEN, KID! I’ve been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I’m out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.
