Seven Packers Backups Who Could Compete for a Starting Spot

Sean Richardson

Sean Richardson is probably the guy least-likely to start on this list. The Packers’ safeties, as a group, were the weakness of the team in 2013. We know they’re very interested in adding a playmaker to the group they currently have. They’ll probably find a way to do that. Strange things happen, though. Let’s say they can’t get their guy in the draft and they don’t sign a free agent. We’re pretty sure M.D. Jennings won’t be returning as the starter, if he returns at all. Richardson is pretty much the next man up. Richardson played in only five games on special teams as a rookie in 2012. He played in six in 2013 after returning from the physically unable to perform list. He took snaps away from Jennings on defense late in the season, finishing with 13 tackles. Richardson is improving. Slowly… but he is improving.

Bostick, Worthy, Barrington and Richardson will only challenge if/or because Thompson steadfastly refuses to sign FA’s to improve the team. Jones and especially Hawk are TT favorites and in Hawk’s case will make over $5 million next season (Jones 4 m). Maybe by 2016 Barrington will be allowed to play, much like Bishop was held back until an injury in 2010 forced him into the lineup.

Don’t know what people see in Bostick or Quarless, but GB needs to draft a TE in the first few rounds to replace Finley. Worthy is the same guy he was in college…plays when he feels like it and runs hot and cold.

Boyd, absolutely. Jones underwhelmed in his rookie season to say the least. His first round status guarantees that he will “challenge” much like Justin Harrell clone Derek Sherrod will get one last chance to proved he isn’t Marshall Newhouse in a skirt.

      No Lattimore?!?! WTF

I need more cowbell & I need more Lattimore

Jones was benched in favor of Hawk on passing downs? So you’re saying there was one ILB out there on passing downs, inevitably making the formation a Quarters or Dime package? Well Hawk’s been the lone backer in those formations since he became a starter and it’s not because he’s the most talented LB out there-if that were the case Matthews would be out there (and in theory I’d prefer that)-it’s because he’s the captain and QB of the defense, that’s just how systems in GB and much if not all of the League operate.

All that to say, Jones is pretty good in coverage, at least vs. TEs-he doesn’t get beat all that often and when he does it’s usually on a good throw-now if only he were as good at stopping the run and rushing the passer.

B.J. Raji started every game and didn’t record any stats for a bunch of the games. Jerel Worthy was only active for 2 games and had a tackle. WooHoo – sounds like we found a starter, or at least a contributor, in JW.

Fuck me that’s a lot of holes to fulfill. I disagree re Stoneburner. I’d love to see him get a chance.
Also, please note the theme of injuries in relation to Datone Jones and Worthy. Alas, nothing will be overhauled, nothing will change, and the injuries will continue.

    • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

And unfortunately that’s not just a recent trend (Harrell, Neal, Perry); not sure what it is but TT just can’t seem to find D-(or O) linemen that are able to stay healthy.

      • Avatar for E. Wolf E. Wolf says:

I don’t think it has to do with TT at all–but the medical and training staff.

        • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

I’m also disappointed with the training staff, as most Packers fans likely are, but I dunno what they could’ve done to prevent the injuries to Worthy, Perry, Jones, Harrell’s ACL, Sherrod, or Bulaga. As for the medical staff, they botched Sherrod’s surgery, no doubt about that, but Worthy seems to have healed damn proper, not sure about Bulaga, Harrell, or Neal.

          • Avatar for E. Wolf E. Wolf says:

Ankle sprains, hamstring pulls are, from what I understand, in part attributable to training and condition. I have heard both about ACL tears–that it is and is not.
Regardless, to be “first” in injuries there out of four years is prima facie evidence that they are doing something wrong.

          • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

I don’t believe full tears can really be averted, their magnitude mitigated, perhaps; it doesn’t take much to sprain an ankle ligament, unless it’s a high-ankle sprain. I can’t disagree with the cumulative number of injuries, I was just speaking in regards to the lines-it seems like a lot of bad luck be it a collection of poor genes or merely unavoidable collisions at awkward angles or something else altogether seemingly more unrealistic (like the Universe being a pissed off Vikings fan).

        • Avatar for gort gort says:

The Pack ended with 15 on IR and the Eagles ended with 5 on IR. The medical / training staff can’t prevent the contact injuries, but we had way too many non-contact injuries. This is not a recent issue. We have recent history of being near the “top” of the league in quantity of guys on IR. That must change.

I’d add Mike Daniels to this list. He’s not a starter.

If Hayward comes back healthy and Williams is cut, I could see 29 as a starter.

What happened to Lattimore, too? He was beastly for a while in the middle.

Hopefully TT is doing a self assessment here. Both his protégés in Schneider and Dorsey have followed more in the Ron Wolf mold and used FA wisely to build very strong programs in a pretty quick timeframe. In the early rounds, I’m tired of getting guys that are switching positions, have question marks next to their name, an injury history, etc. Either trade out of the round, or reach a little bit and draft a guy earlier. Look how much shit Phil Emery took for taking Kyle Long – who is now going to the pro bowl.

I’m tired of all these subpar defensive draft picks. It would help us so much if we could just find an all-pro defensive player like Matthews. Preferably one that can be a leader and fire up the defense. Our defense’s competitive fire has been non-existent ever since Woodson left.

None of these scenarios scream “inspired” moves by Ted (assuming it plays out like this).

We will be lucky to even win the Division next season following this tract.

I know! Don’t you just hate it when you get stuck behind a tract of farmland, those tectonic plates are SOOOOOO damn slow, and the digestive tracts are no better, they’re always backed up, must be because we’re cheeseheads; tractors are sons of bitches as well.

  10. Avatar for T Pack T Pack says:

I disagree. If we stay healthy & Rodgers is back to normal 12 wins should be automatic. That easily can take the division.

As far as injuries go- There are a myriad of reasons they happen. I am pretty positive our staff isn’t doing anything too different than every other medical staff. Not like they are training them using some new age method.
Playing out of position, not reading plays correctly, over compensating & just bad luck most likely contributes to all the injuries.

We draft ok, come back healthy we should be ok for next season.

    • Avatar for E. Wolf E. Wolf says:

We “led” the League in injuries three out of the past four years. Some flukey stuff, like Rodgers, Cobb, Finley, even NIck Collins. But we have ankle sprains, ACL tears, and above hamstring pulls up the ass.
I do not know what it is, but I know something is wrong. This is why we need some sort of audit and investigation into the medical and training staff.
Fer chrissake they failed to diagnose that guy who was released that the Browns picked up, who only then found the ACL tear or whatever it was.
