Well, Mason Crosby is Back, Isn’t He

Mason Crosby

In case you haven’t noticed, the worst full-time kicker in the NFL last season, Mason Crosby, just might be the best this season.

A year after hitting an atrocious (and career-low) 63.6 percent of his field goals, Crosby has made all nine of his attempts this season. That includes a nice 5-for-5 last Sunday.

That effort earned Crosby NFC special teams player of the week honors.

So, I’ve probably just jinxed him by pointing all of this out.

Or, maybe he got the message from the Green Bay Packers in the offseason. That was a pretty clear one — get your shit together or we’re moving on.

Not only did the Packers bring in competition for Crosby — in the form of Giorgio Tavecchio — for the first time in years, but they also made Crosby take a pay cut this season.

Whatever happened, it worked… at least so far.

The real test will come when it gets cold and the winds are swirling in Lambeau, but so far, so good.

Crosby said what cured his slump last year was getting sick and being forced to rest. I think that Masthay doing the kick offs is probably one of the main things at play here keeping MC fresh.

Masthay handling the kickoffs may be a gamechanger for a lot of teams. Crosby doesn’t have to worry about screwing his groove up by blasting the ball out of the end zone every time, which is now expected with the closer ball placement. Kinda like how the HR Derby wrecks your swing for the rest of the season. If you have heavy legged punter, why not use him for the long blasts? I think we’ll see more of this around the league.

Can’t believe that buffoon McCarthy stuck with him.

Yes, for the fair minded, this is a nice reminder of how fortunate we are that MM and TT run the team and not the fans, including myself.

I would have fired Crosby at Austin Straubel after landing from San Fran. Having done so, the Packers would now have less cap room and likely a worse kicker to show for it.

Crosby has redeemed himself, so far.

“Just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber, you went and did something’ like this…and totally redeemed yourself” Not an entirely appropriate quote, but it is what comes to my mind. Way to go Crosby!! Keep it up!!

I don’t think many punters out there, right now, could ever dare to match what masthay is doing for the packers in field goals and kick offs. Masthay is truely the most talented underrated staple of a player on the team. He is so valuable that his value is over looked. I doubt there is anyone in the world that could match this guys game. Give the man a mid-season raise.
