The Detroit Lions currently lead the NFC North at 3-1. Yeah, you read that right.
But how good are these clowns?
As you’ve probably heard 967 times this week, the Lions haven’t won in Wisconsin since 1991. Erik Kramer was their quarterback then. Mike Tomczack was the Green Bay Packers quarterback in that game.
This is probably the Leos best chance to beat the Packers in some time. Today, Packers coach Mike McCarthy was gushing about Detroit.
“This is probably their best team as far as the way they’re playing coming into the game — as I recall,” McCarthy said Friday. “I can’t sit here and tell you off the top of my head how I felt before each and every game.
“I will say clearly this is a very talented football team. They’re very systematic in their approach. Their coaching staff has been together for quite some time. And the way they play on offense and defense is pretty much the same still philosophically.
“I think this is probably the best that I’ve seen them play coming into a contest.”
The Lions are sixth in the NFL in total offense. They’re averaging 404.8 yards per game.
Part of the reason the Lions aren’t a bunch of suckbags this year is because of Reggie Bush. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Bush gives Detroit a legitimate rushing threat.
Bush has 254 yards rushing this season. He also has 179 yards receiving and is probably the guy who’s going to torch the Packers shitty defense on Sunday.
Detroit isn’t so hot defensively. They’re ranked 19th in the NFL and are giving up 25.3 points per game. Still, that’s better than the shitbag Packers defense, which is ranked 28th and is giving up 29.3 per game.
That tells you there are probably going to be a lot of points scored on Sunday and for the first time in a while, it looks like the Lions have a chance to win.
I’d say they have a very good chance to win. And if they do, the sky will fall, the oceans will turn to blood, and Vince Lombardi will climb outta his grave, rip off Mike McCarthy’s head and spit out his eyeballs.
Or maybe the Packers will be 1-3 with still all the time of the world to win the division and you will wake up hungover on Monday as usual.
I guess you’ve never heard of sarcasm.
Also, how do you know I wake up hungover on Mondays?
I’m not scared, honestly I’m not. The Packers are still angry from their last game, they’re coming off of a bye, and they’re playing at home. I still think Datone Jones will have a break out game, and now that his ankle is almost completely healed, this could be it. And that brings another point about health. The Packers are almost completely healthy. The only major contributor ruled out of this game is Casey Hayward. All those together, and I can’t help but feel like the Packers are poised to have a huge game, just like they did against Houston last year.
Detroit should have won at Detroit last year, save for an actual last minute drive for a TD by Rodgers, and they were ahead 14-0 in the game last year at Lambeau. So, I would say they had a chance to win last year too.
The fact that the Lions have played well against the Packers in recent years, especially at Lambeau, is the thing that has me the most concerned.
I have seen them play in all their games this season, and I don’t think they are going anywhere. They could win the North if the Packers and Bears suck badly enough, but they are no legitimate threat to win the NFC.
Wait, Detroit should have won but Aaron Rodgers saved the game with a TD in the last minute? Wow, they got lucky.
Just when everyone thinks one thing will happen, something else does. It will be no different Sunday. That said, I never make predictions.
But you just did. ;)
I’ve watched a couple of Lions games and it sure seemed like they won not because they were so fantastic but because they made the fewest mistakes.
They aren’t an elite team that’s for sure. It is just a little worrisome that what they are really good at is what the Packers are really shitty at stopping.
Don’t you win football games by making the fewest mistakes? And when you win footballs games people usually think you’re fantastic. Or maybe I’m missing something here.
Lets remember the final game of the 2011 season, Matt Flynn won that game for GB, Matt Strap-On threw for over 500 yards, YET they still couldn’t break their Lambeau field losing streak. Although, the kitties didn’t have a run game. Also, remember that Barry sanders is on the cover of Madden 25, the curse is for real…GO PACK GO!!
The lions coming close is nothing new, I just have a bad feeling about this game–and this season.
