With Mason Crosby shanking the hell out of most everything he puts his boot too, the Green Bay Packers clearly need a new field goal kicker.
Crosby has connected on only 61 percent of his field goal attempts this season (11 of 18) after missing two of three on Sunday, indoors no less.
So what are the Packers going to do to remedy this situation?
Nothing.
“I’ll address the field goal situation,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “Mason’s got to put the ball through the uprights. That’s something that we’ve got to do a better job of. I thought Mason had a very good week of work; didn’t hit it today the way he needs to hit it, but we’ll continue with Mason. We will not blink as far as our commitment to him.”
Although it’s safe to say we’d all love someone other than Crosby kicking field goals, the Packers don’t exactly have a wealth of options.
Ryan Longwell and his 38-year-old leg is sitting around after being cut by the Vikings in the offseason. Billy Cundiff is out there too. The Redskins cut him earlier this season after he did his best Mason Crosby impersenation.
Are those guys viable options?
Probably not. So the Packers will live and die on the leg of Mason Crosby.
This dip-shit sucks. I’ve been saying it for 5 years.
I don’t know why Packer fans give this turd so many mulligans.
He has NEVER made a pressure kick. If we’re down 1 or 2 points with a game winner, he’ll ALWAYS miss.
I can recall at least 5 games over the last 5 years we didn’t win because he couldn’t make a kick.
I don’t know why everyone still thinks this jerk is suck a good kicker…because he was making 60-yarders in Boulder in college?
I’m not a Crosby apologist or anything…but just curious if anyone can come up with a decent list of games that we lost that were directly related to a miss or misses (and we lost by that margin or less). Im sure the talking heads will get this stat out…but anecdotally, can anyone remember any big misses that lost us a game?
Holy shit and a half! YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH! CROSBY SUCKS!
if only Longwell could kickoff deeper………..however, he may be tainted from the years at the purple pussy dome too…………
All crosby was ever good for was converting anything inside 40 now he cant even do that. We should be a 4 down team between the opp 40 and 20
boys have your forgotten how good he was last year????? 2nd best in Packer history
Replace him now? and for who???
Work him out of it
5 loses in 5 years ohh my god how terrible lol
Exactly, replace him with….? It’s easy to play armchair QB.
oh, Longwell is retired
And who would you replace him with?
If you made the calls we would have cut Finley a long time ago. And who came through on Sunday?
Just sayin…
I’ve stuck with Crosby through all the ups and downs over the past 5 years, but holy fuck he’s making that difficult right now.
I’ll say this, I compare Mason to Jermichael’s situation. Plenty of upside and potential to be one the greatest kickers in the league, but lacks the mental resilience to reach that level.
I also agree with everyone elses assessment, who would we replace him with? Billy Cundiff? That clown is a bigger choke artist than Mason by far. Bring Longwell back? I don’t think we should have let him walk to begin with but he’s 38 now, lacks the big leg at his age, and has been kicking in domes for the past 6+ years.
Bottom line is Mason stays because, while our grass is isn’t green, it’s shit covered dog park on the other side of the fence.
MM’s comments supporting Crosby mean nothing. He will continue to support Crosby up until the second that we cut him.
Until you have someone else in practice that can put it through the uprights OF COURSE you are going to support Crosby.
I didn’t trust Crosby to make a FG in 2010, and we still won the Super Bowl. Basically, if you are outside the 25, you GO FOR IT.
If you can get someone better, I’m fine with that, but the last thing you want to do is cut Crosby and bring in someone who is worse.
Well obviously you can’t replace him now, numb nuts.
But theres about 25 kickers in the NFL better than this puke.
Look at the ViQueens & Ravens kickers…rookies. Both are better tan Crosby.
FACT is: Crosby costs us at least1 game a year.
We’ve lost to the ViQueens in 2009 because he couldn’t make a 52 yarder in a dome. Than same year he missed a chipper that would’ve beat the Bears.
We lost to Miami in 2010 cause he couldn’t make a 40-some yarder
& he missed a long one very badly against the Colts this year.
& these are all just ones off the top of my head
Move on after this year.
Hey Tyko show a little maturity in your comments.
what are yah 14?
yeah, he’s in a slump, agreed
sure sounded like you wanted to dump him like yesterday. Next year, hell he may well be back in the groove by then
Finley is not a good point of comparison. When he was playing shitty or injured, we brought in a serviceable Crabtree or Quarless. We don’t have a second option with Crosby, so there’s no place else for us to go. I’d be all for bringing a guy in for a little competition, perhaps on the practice squad, and we activate him if Mason continues with the shanks. His kicks consistently make violent direction changes in the middle of the air….I don’t think I’ve seen that with other kickers. Can’t figure it out.
No teams have a second option for kicker on roster. Bringing in an outside source is not comparable to replacing a player at a position that includes standard 2nd and 3rd string depth that’s planned for in advance.
Bringing in another kicker for a try out can possibly light a fire under Mason’s ass. But it could also backfire and destroy his already fragile confidence. Then we’re left possibly worse than we already are.
Actually, Crosby won the week 1 game against te Eagles. He also won the regular season Giants game last year (I was there), altoug Rodgers and co advanced the ball so far into GIants territory that it was a chip shot.
I supported Crosby in the past, but not so sure about that anymore. Kickers seem more like baseball players, in that a psychological hangup can be permanent. See e.g. Chuck Knoblauch, Jeff Weaver, that Cardinal who so erratic years ago in the playoffs. I am not aware of any kickers who have been able to shake off the sort of shanks that this guy has.
What they should do is put im on injured reserved, get some free agent guy, and then bring someone in next year.
The score was tied (35-35) in New York. The game would’ve went to overtime.
Technichally it wasn’t on the line
Like I said-he won the game but it was on the 20 yard line or someting like that.
And since there is a good chance we would have lost had it gone to overtime. ….
Hey, spend a 4th or 5th rounder on that kicker from Stanford. Guy is an animal.
Still leaves us with Crosby for this year though.
What about Nate Kaeding?
I agree with Doug, have never seen a kicker’s ball move so violently in the air. He has no confidence, his team has no confidence in him. The Packers need to atleast bring in a guy to pressure Crosby, and they definitely need a new guy next year. Too many blown games
