Surprise, surprise!
The Green Bay Packers are considering a trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, according to Bill Huber. McCoy became expendable after the Browns selected Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden in the first round last night.
After losing Matt Flynn in free agency, the Packers have only Graham Harrell and Nick Hill on the roster behind Aaron Rodgers. Presumably, McCoy could be had for a late-round pick — Huber suggests a sixth or a seventh-rounder. The Packers have one sixth and four seventh-round picks.
McCoy has started 21 games in two seasons. In 2011, he threw for 2,733 yards, 14 TDs and 11 interceptions in 13 games before a helmet-to-helmet hit sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Interestingly, if McCoy came to the Packers he would be competing with an old college rival. McCoy played at Texas and Harrell played at Texas Tech. Both were Heisman finalists in 2008.
Harrell’s Texas Tech team beat McCoy’s Texas team on a last-second touchdown that season, effectively ending any shot the Longhorns had at a national championship.
It will be interesting to see if this comes to fruition.
