The Green Bay Packers have promoted tight ends coach Ben McAdoo to quarterbacks coach. He replaces Tom Clements, who was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Although the promotion isn’t surprising — McAdoo is a Mike McCarthy guy, having worked with him in San Francisco and New Orleans — he still seems an odd choice for quarterbacks coach.
Not only hasn’t he played quarterback at the NFL level, he didn’t play in the NFL or college at all, as far as we can tell. The other thing that makes the promotion somewhat curious is the fact that Aaron Rodgers openly stated he preferred the team’s new quarterbacks coach have NFL quarterbacking experience.
Still, the Packers obviously think highly of McAdoo and so do others around the league. The team blocked a request by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins, who wanted to interview him for their open offensive coordinator positions.
