As we anticipated, the Green Bay Packers new offensive coordinator will most likely come from within the organization. Head coach Mike McCarthy said as much yesterday.
“As a staff we’ve prepared for it as far as expectations of Joe getting an opportunity,” McCarthy said. “Now it’s an opportunity for others on the staff to move up.”
We initially speculated the job could go to receivers coach Edgar Bennett. After serving as running backs coach, the Packers moved the former running back to receivers coach prior to last season, a clear sign they’re grooming him for an offensive coordinator role.
It now seems like quarterbacks coach Tom Clements is the front-runner to replace the departed Joe Philbin, who was named the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Clements was actually a candidate for the head coaching jobs at Penn State and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs’ job is still open.
Additionally, Clements has coordinating experience, serving as the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator from 2004-05.
As for Bennett, there has been speculation Philbin may hire him to be Miami’s offensive coordinator.
We fully expect the dominoes to begin falling in the next week.
