Competition At Safety Was Over Before It Began

Morgan Burnett

Burnett looks like he'll start the season next to Nick Collins.

At least one of your local Green Bay Packers beat writers suggested there would be a competition between [intlink id=”525″ type=”category”]Charlie Peprah[/intlink] and [intlink id=”1034″ type=”category”]Morgan Burnett[/intlink] for the team’s starting free safety spot.

The competition never materialized.

Burnett, who spent most of last season on injured reserve, was handed the starting spot as soon as he was medically cleared to play.

“I’m looking forward to Morgan taking that next step and really showing us the reason why we took him when we did,” Packers safeties coach Darren Perry said. “Just keep him healthy, and I think all the things that excited us about him at Georgia Tech will show up.”

The Packers spent a third-round draft pick on Burnett in 2010, so the team is invested in his success. Peprah only started one game prior to last season, his fifth in the league.

While Peprah was solid in 2010, totaling 63 tackles and two interceptions, he doesn’t possess the kind of athleticism Burnett does.

Once he fully understand the defense, he could be a special player.

Monty McMahon

Monty McMahon is one of the founders of Total Packers. He is probably the most famous graduate of UW-Oshkosh next to Jim Gantner.
