Although there may have been a trade market for linebacker [intlink id=”139″ type=”category”]Nick Barnett[/intlink], it looks like the Green Bay Packers will release him.
Players can’t be released until Thursday, but Barnett left team facilities a short time after arriving this morning. He met with GM Ted Thompson, who informed him of the team’s decision.
Barnett tweeted the news.
Just met with Ted, Thanks for the great 8 years. Very blessed 2 be apart of such a great tradition and great fans.
Happy I was able to be here for the great xlv run… I will always keep a Special place in my heart for this team and city.
Rob Demovsky says the Packers could still try to trade Barnett before Thursday, but the possibility seems unlikely.
Barnett was scheduled to make $5.5 million in base salary, plus a $400,000 roster bonus and a $150,000 workout bonus. His release will help the Packers get under the salary cap.
Thanks for getting injured. Your injury will be missed.
Glad to see he took the high road…for now.
Well he tweeted like a class act. Probably something his agent wrote for him… but that was about the best response he could have sent out.
The writing was on the wall once he ran his mouth before the superbowl…with LB’s that include Matthews, Hawk, Bishop, Zombo, Walden we are set for the future!
Largely a forgotten man who will probably not be remembered for being as good a player as he was in his prime…rather he’ll be remembered for getting injured during our run and paving the way for Desmond Bishop to whoop some ass.
Regardless of all that…Barnett is still a beast in Madden 10!
stay classy Nick … best of luck with your future NFL franchise
I have had the pleasure of eating dinner next to Nick and his young family, and I always respect the players who become part of the community and even attempt to do things for the community.
The move to the 3-4 was the true end of his career here. I wish him luck for the remainder of his career.
It seems unfortunate that people only remember the last season of injuries and stupid tweets about photos with this guy. He was a solid defender for the majority of the 7 years before last. He’ll never be confused with Ray Nitschke, but he wasnt named defensive captain for nothing.
I will always consider Barnett a great packer
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!
true. barnett was a beast and a passionate packer. He said some dumb things but he was a good guy that always played hard and did not back down to anyone on the field. we will miss you nick
