Who Made It To Packers Offensive Line Workouts?

Monty McMahon by Monty McMahon

Bryan Bulaga
Bulaga apparently has no patience for cancelled flights.

As we told you last week, the Green Bay Packers offensive linemen worked out together near Nashville for three days this week.

Tackle [intlink id=”225″ type=”category”]Chad Clifton[/intlink] and center Scott Wells, who organized the get together, live in the area. What we didn’t know until today, is who actually showed up.

In addition to Wells and Clifton, the workouts included tackle [intlink id=”224″ type=”category”]Mark Tauscher[/intlink], guard [intlink id=”90″ type=”category”]Josh Sitton[/intlink], and backups [intlink id=”583″ type=”category”]T.J. Lang[/intlink], [intlink id=”1037″ type=”category”]Marshall Newhouse[/intlink] and Evan Dietrich-Smith.

Conspicuous by their absence were two starters from last season, tackle [intlink id=”925″ type=”category”]Byran Bulaga[/intlink] and guard [intlink id=”94″ type=”category”]Daryn Colledge[/intlink].

Bulaga, it seems, had every intention of participating, but bailed after his flight from Chicago got cancelled.

“I guess they’re having a good time,” Bulaga said Wednesday morning during an interview on Green and Gold Today. “Scott called everybody up and just said, ‘Hey, do you want to come down for three of four days to work out in the morning and then spend time together the rest of the day?’ I was waiting in O’Hare airport to fly down there. They were going to do some workouts and then do some O-line type workouts.”

Colledge’s situation is a little different.

The veteran left guard is not under contract for the 2011 season and will likely be an unrestricted free agent when a new labor deal is complete. It seems unlikely he’ll be back with the team.

His wife is also expecting the couple’s first child in a month.

Colledge has been biding his time this offseason by working out at his alma mater, Boise State, with former and current Broncos linemen.

“I’m in the best shape I’ve been in since maybe I was a rookie,” Colledge said. “I’m ready for the next opportunity if it’s there and, if it’s not, if it’s Green Bay, I’m ready to be the best left guard I can be for them. … The thought of leaving there would be tough.”

It doesn’t appear the two offensive linemen the Packers drafted this year — tackle [intlink id=”1613″ type=”category”]Derek Sherrod[/intlink] and guard [intlink id=”1625″ type=”category”]Caleb Schlauderaff[/intlink] — were invited to the event.

These worhouts are not a good idea and it’s a simple reason why.
No other un-coached player is going to see what you’re doing wrong lest accept or acknowledge what he is doing wrong.
The level of seriousness, effort, endurance can only be acheived by them via the coaches. The chance of suffering an injury during real camp increases as you have gone through half-ass drills and re-inforced bad habits.
Staying in shape should be a constant for them and would be wise to just continue to do what was done during any other off season until camp does arrive.
