Packers Interested In Adding Another Fullback

If there’s one thing we know about Green Bay Packers general manager [intlink id=”20″ type=”category”]Ted Thompson[/intlink], it’s that he loves his fullbacks.

Even though the Packers use more four- and five-wide receiver sets than anyone in the NFL, a time the fullback isn’t typically on the field, the Packers have carried three fullbacks on their roster since they drafted [intlink id=”438″ type=”category”]Quinn Johnson[/intlink] in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Packers now seem intent on adding another one to the mix.

Over the weekend, the team worked out former Army fullback Collin Mooney.

Mooney is nearing the end of a two-year service commitment, at which time he’d be a free agent eligible to sign with any team. The 5-10, 246-pounder rushed for 1,339 yards as a senior.

In addition, the team has also taken a look at several draft prospects who play the fullback position. Those include Yale’s Shane Bannon and Houston defensive tackle Matangi Tonga, who many teams are projecting as a fullback in the pros.

Before everyone flips their lid, the Packers do have some question marks at the position entering the season.

Johnson is the only fullback currently under contract on the Packers’ roster.

Korey Hall is expected to be a restricted free agent once a new collective bargaining agreement is signed. [intlink id=”251″ type=”category”]John Kuhn[/intlink], meanwhile, will likely be unrestricted.

While there seems to be little chance Hall doesn’t come back, there’s a real chance Kuhn won’t return, even though he said he expects to re-sign with the Packers.

So, while most sane people would suggest the Packers only need to carry two fullbacks anyway, Thompson obviously has another idea in mind.
