Kuhn Expects To Be Back With Packers

John Kuhn
Kuhn may be back in Green Bay after all.

[intlink id=”251″ type=”category”]John Kuhn[/intlink] isn’t doing himself any favors.

Over the weekend, the pending free agent said he expects to return to the Green Bay Packers next season.

Either Kuhn doesn’t expect there will be much of a market for his services or he doesn’t want to play anywhere else, which severely diminishes his chance of signing a big-money contract in free agency.

It’s not that fullbacks are in demand around the NFL, but Kuhn is the second-best fullback likely to be a free agent when the new collective bargaining agreement is signed.

The [intlink id=”343″ type=”category”]Baltimore Ravens[/intlink] Le’Ron McClain is the most attractive option because of his prowess as a runner and should get a sizable deal. Kuhn is next in the class and after proving himself as a quality short-yardage back, seemingly has the potential to get a nice offer from another team.

Add the Packers glut of fullbacks, a running game where Ryan Grant and James Starks will see the bulk of the carries and an offense that figures to use the fullback even less next season, and it’s easy to see the Packers letting Kuhn go.

Even though there are plenty of reasons not to, the Packers definitely have some interest in keeping Kuhn — they tendered him a contract as a potential restricted free agent before the lockout, although it was at the lowest possible amount.

The tender is unlikely to mean anything under the rules of a new collective bargaining agreement, but it may not matter. Apparently, Kuhn only has eyes for Green Bay.

Then again, if he goes someplace else, the fans are going to have to learn to yell Kuuuuuuuuuuhn every time he touches the ball and that’s going to be confusing for everyone.

He’s not a big time blocker. So I don’t see him commanding too much money on the open market. Most teams that pick up FBs in free agency are looking for a blocker.

He has more value to the Packers. We should keep him unless some team throws something crazy at him.
