Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Al Harris cleared waivers Tuesday afternoon and became a free agent.
The news isn’t terribly surprising. Although we fully believe there is interest in Harris, as the National Football Post initially reported, teams are unlikely to make a deal with him before seeing him work out.
By making a waiver claim, a team would simply be betting that Harris is healthy, since they wouldn’t have been able to have him in for a workout before the waiver process was completed. They also would have had to pay the remainder of his salary for the 2010 season, which is $2.5 million.
Now, whoever signs Harris can make sure he’s fully recovered from the knee injury that’s kept him out since last December and negotiate a cheaper deal with him.
The Post says Harris’ agent Jack Bechta is in negotiations with several teams.
We fully expect the Minnesota Vikings to take a look at Harris.
