Packers Reward Woodson With Two-Year Extension

The Green Bay Packers have locked up cornerback Charles Woodson for an additional two years.

Woodson, the reigning NFL defensive player of the year, has three years remaining on his current deal. He will be 39 if he plays out the full contract, which seems unlikely.

The deal is worth $55 million over the next five years, but the Packers rewarded Woodson for his recent play in the form of up-front money and bonuses.

“What was key on this deal is that the team essentially made a three-year commitment to Woodson where he can make over $33 million over the next three years. Overall it’s a new five-year deal with a max value of over $55 million that has $21 million in advances and bonuses,” agent Carl Poston said.

The deal has been in the works for the past several months and comes on the heels of the New York Jets Darrelle Revis signing a new four-year, $46 million deal earlier this week. Revis finished second to Woodson in last season’s defensive player of the year race.

Revis was demanding Nnamdi Asomugha money. Asomugha, who plays for the Oakland Raiders, is the highest paid cornerback in the game.

Fittingly, it looks like Revis didn’t even get Charles Woodson money.
