The Thing About Preseason Predictions

Monty McMahon by Monty McMahon

Mark Sanchez wonders why no one is jumping on the Jets bandwagon.

Is they don’t mean anything.

Sure, the Green Bay Packers are the preseason darling of many — the fashionable Super Bowl choice, if you will. What does that get the Packers?

High expectations.

Granted, there’s no reason this year’s version of the Packers shouldn’t have high expectations entering the season, but it’s July 1. No one in the NFL has done as much as put on a pair of shoulder pads since the 2009 season ended.

Here’s how many NFL titles have been won in July in the entire history of the NFL: zero.

That hasn’t stopped Sports Illustrated windbag Peter King from placing the Packers atop his pre-preseason power rankings. It hasn’t stopped Yahoo! Sports from naming the Packers their pre-preseason Super Bowl favorite. It hasn’t stopped Fox Sport’s Adam Schein from choosing the Packers as his NFC Super Bowl pick.

So, obviously, it’s a given the Packers will make a trip to Dallas in January to play in the big game.

Well, as our friend Jersey Al put it earlier this week: EVERYBODY. JUST. STOP. ENOUGH!!!!

What truly befuddles me is the lack of imagination among NFL “experts.” Or perhaps it’s the lack of intelligence…

Yes, it’s definitely the lack of intelligence.

The Packers have, at best, several question marks (cornerback, outside linebacker, offensive line, special teams) and at worst, several glaring holes. We looked at these very question marks when people started calling the Packers the best team in the NFL, back in May.

By my estimation, nothing has changed since then, except for more people jumping on the Packers’ bandwagon.

Besides the Packers, the are quite a few other good-looking teams here in July.

The New York Jets, who made the AFC Championship game last season, have improved in several areas and quarterback Mark Sanchez is entering his second season and should make a major jump. The Indianapolis Colts still have a guy named Peyton Manning calling the shots. The San Diego Chargers won 13 games without a running game last season and chose a running back in the first round of this year’s draft. The Dallas Cowboys, who have stars on both sides of the ball, won their first playoff game in the Tony Romo era, last season.

That’s to say nothing of the Minnesota Vikings, who won the NFC North last season and will return with virtually the same roster intact. The same thing could be said about the team that won the Super Bowl last season, the New Orleans Saints.

I understand Green Bay is the trendy pick and choosing the Colts or Chargers to win the Super Bowl isn’t going to get you a lot of eyeballs on your article or video, but really…

Fuck off, already!

Aside from maybe the Cowboys, teams usually rise to meet expectations. As a born and bred Packers fan I go into every season thinking this could be the year…with a heavy and hesitant heart.

Over half of the current headlines at NFL.com regard suspensions or allegations. July sure is a long month for football fans.
