ESPN’s Outside The Lines recently took a look at Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly’s trial for possession of codeine, and the rising popularity, particularly among athletes from Texas, of the drink Purple Drank.
The segment doesn’t really say anything about Jolly we don’t already know, but it does shed a little light on what Jolly and other athletes are doing with codeine-laced drinks.
Predictably, the NFL had nothing to say about the matter.
Here’s the report.

I know I’ll get ripped for this but,how ghetto can you get! Some of these people in the video make alot of money and yet can’t change for the better, instead of helping those to get out and up from the ghetto, those who got the chance can’t live without the ghetto.
Like Dennis Green shouted”They are who we thought they were”.
i’m all for the personal conduct code and athletes setting good examples, but (remember, i’m a Vikes’ fan now) for some reason Jolly’s possession of codeine…it doesn’t sound like that big of a deal. haven’t followed the story really but was he charged with intent to sell? i don’t know…”coke”, yeh. but “codeine”? aren’t there bigger fish to fry?
i know…the purple drank. still…
Taryn, you should be ripped for that. Unless you have a degree in sociology or are from a rough hood, you should keep ‘ghetto’ out your mouth. You might as well say ‘why they gotta be so, you know, black all the time’.
Jeff, I think you are automatically charged with intent to sell/distribute if you possess more than a certain quantity. My guess is he is just a big boy and likes to party….I also think they are cracking down on this and they want to make an example of him.
While not as destructive as meth, you can draw comparisons. Both have hit lower income areas harder. Codeine by itself is not a big deal, but there is a market out there and people are trafficking it I agree that they may be making an example of Jolly.
got it.
Tequilla,I don’t have a degree is sociology but I’m well versed in the” street” arts and being “polically correct” is bullshit. They don’t practice “PC” in the” hood”or any other name they wish to attach to it, why should I.
When some one is blessed with talent or gets the chance to get out of it,you go back to help another get out. Making the money he does and going back for a “ghetto” cocktail spells loser.Maybe he learns something or he hears the words of Dennis Green over and over.
I’m a big fan of the Pack but “stupid is stupid”and odds are “stupidity” will emerge again down the road. Like the comedian Ron White said”you can’t fix stupid”or the Forrest Gump version”stupid is as stupid does”.
Politically Correctiveness(not Websters) “the act of closing one’s eyes to reality with the hopes that whatever the “abuse or subject is” goes away by simply appeasing it”.
Those dudes need to stay off that texas tea, purple potion, purple drank!
@ Taryn and Tequilla,
Taryn you are so on point. Why do those dumb “Negroes” go on doing stupid shit when they have money. Earth to anyone with half a brain….you make money, you move to a better place for you family. Buy a nice home for your mother. Give your kids a stable environment. Do positive things with your life. Not this dumb-ass negro shit that a lot of these fools are doing. Only a backwards person who hates black people would try to justify this “ignant” behavior. Keep being positive Taryn, I see you have common sense. As for you Tequilla, your name says more about your mind set than any post can. You are proud that your name is after a drink that probably many of your friends in the hood that “keep it real” have spit up after drinking. Are you serious? And before you trip…..I’m black and grew up in the projects here in Baltimore. Nothing cute about being a druggie. And even more stupid is being a druggie with money. Negro please!!!!
