The Green Bay Packers used the original-round tender on cornerback Will Blackmon, who is returning from a knee injury. The tender is for $1.176 million and gives the Packers the right to match any offer Blackmon receives.
If Blackmon signs with another team, the Packers would receive a fourth-round draft pick.
Meanwhile, cornerback Tramon Williams, who finished the season as a starter, will reportedly receive a first-round tender. The tender is for $2.198 million and like Blackmon, the Packers have the right to match any offer Williams receives, but the price of a first round draft pick makes it unlikely there will be any competition.
Although there was some question whether he would be offered a contract at all, left guard Daryn Colledge will reportedly be tendered by the Packers this week, as well. However, Colledge, who started every game in 2009, will have to fight to keep his job.
With Scott Wells entrenched at center, the Packers will give Jason Spitz an opportunity to compete with Colledge, who was easily the Packers worst starting offensive lineman in 2009, at left guard.
“He’s going to be challenged, there’s no doubt about it,” said McCarthy. “I think Daryn can improve. I hope he’s here to improve.”
Spitz, who is returning from a back injury, should be able to overtake Colledge at left guard. He played guard in 2008, and played well, before moving to center last season.
Keeping Colledge around will provide the Packers with solid depth – something they didn’t have for much of the 2009 season.
