We’re going to take a quick detour from the Green Bay Packers to mention that there’s a new Tecmo Bowl game coming out. And sure, I may be dating myself here, but Tecmo Bowl and its follow-up Super Tecmo Bowl – or Tecmo Super Bowl depending on your preference – are still two of the funnest sports video games to play to this very day.
Frankly, I’d take Super Tecmo Bowl over Madden any day.
So, the fact that Tecmo Bowl: Throwback will be released for the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade has me understandably excited.
The game is essentially an updated version of Super Tecmo Bowl – so no four-play action, Bo Jackson left/Marcus Allen right, letting Joe Montana throw the undefendable slant over the middle or using Lawrence Taylor to block extra points.
Take a look (via Game Trailers).

Unfortunately, unlike its predecessors, Tecmo Bowl: Throwback doesn’t appear to have licensed the names of NFL teams or players, which was part of the fun of the original Tecmo Bowl games. I mean, who didn’t like to fling it deep to Sterling Sharpe on every other play while sprinkling in a dash of Ed “Toolbox” West and a Don Majkowski scramble here and there? No more Barry Sanders running for 3,000 yards in a season. No more Derrick Thomas racking up 50 sacks in a campaign.
Yeah, sorry, reliving past glories. No one will play Tecmo Bowl with me to this day.
Anyway, other than that small point, Tecmo Bowl: Throwback looks pretty awesome.
