It’s that time of year again. The time of year when the draft is still two months away and free agency hasn’t started yet.
So, we might as well talk about Lord Brett Favre and whether he’ll come back to play for the Minnesota Vikings next season. For one, Vikings’ linebacker Ben Leber says he believes Favre will be back.
“We would love to have the guy back,” Leber said. “My gut feeling is that he is going to come back, and I hope that my gut is right.
That’s swell, but the Vikings’ brass haven’t really been putting any pressure on Favre to make a decision and Favre hasn’t said much of anything since the season ended. We all know how this goes in Green Bay.
“I think waiting all the way to the end is going to be detrimental to this team. I think he’s going to make a decision quick, and I hope he does.”
We, of course, are all for anything that’s detrimental to the Vikings. So let’s hope Favre waits around until training camp starts and then decides to retire once and for all. That could be the most detrimental to the Vikings, especially if they don’t acquire another quarterback and are forced to go into the season with Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels as the No. 1 guy
It doesn’t seem like the Vikings’ locker room has much confidence in either guy.
“But I think a respectable timetable is to let us know as early as possible. With everything that we have, the ingredients that we have on this team — [and] what we can hopefully do next year — give us the time to maybe do something in the draft, whether it be trading picks or whatever, and getting somebody in.”
The feeling seems to be that if Favre doesn’t come back, the Vikings will either have to draft or trade for a quarterback, rather than go into the season with Jackson and Rosenfels. Not exactly a vote of confidence for either guy.
