It looks like the days of Allen Barbre as a starting right tackle for the Green Bay Packers are officially and mercifully over.
Barbre was replaced by recently-resigned veteran Mark Tauscher in the lineup last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, Tauscher went down with an injury shortly after halftime of the Bucs game. Barbre was inserted and the Packers gave up six sacks in the second half, after giving up zero in the first.
With Tauscher unable to play, the Packers have turned to rookie T.J. Lang. After being shuffled around various positions throughout training camp and the early season, Lang seemingly found a home at left tackle, when he began filling in for the oft-injured Chad Clifton. With Clifton healthy, at least for the time being, the Packers are moving Lang again and ending the Barbre experiment.
Barbre has been the Packers’ worst offensive lineman this season, and contributed his fair share to the team’s league-leading sack total.
While one of the Stonehenge monuments would be a better choice to start at right tackle than Barbre, the move does come with some concern – this will be the sixth starting combination of offensive linemen for the Packers this season.
That’s not a recipe for success, especially considering the Packers face a Cowboys pass rush that ranks seventh in the league this season.
