Packers Should Work Out Newly-Released Booty

In another brilliant move by Vikings coach Brad “Chilly” Childress, Minnesota released QB John David Booty from its practice squad on Wednesday and signed offensive tackle Clint Oldenburg, a Colorado State alum who played most recently for the Broncos.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that the Vikings had gotten Booty through to their practice squad after releasing him in the final round of cuts.

In a media briefing later Monday morning, Childress said he may bring Booty back again.

“We roll guys through the practice squad,” Childress said. “Fact is, we needed another o-lineman to practice. I’m not going to rule out bringing him (Booty) back.”

Given all the other players Green Bay has dragged through its horse and pony show this past week, I think the Packers should bring in Booty to work out for them now that the Queens have cut him loose.

Second-year QB Matt Flynn is currently backing up Aaron Rodgers. And while the Packers also have QB Brian Brohm on the practice squad, it probably wouldn’t hurt to have some extra insurance at the quarterback position given the way teams are smacking Rodgers around so far this season. I mean, I’ll be surprised if the guy isn’t seriously injured at some point if the offensive line continues to struggle and Rodgers continues to hold on to the ball too long.

Booty was a fifth round draft pick of the Vikings in 2008 out of Southern Cal and spent last season as the team’s third quarterback. However, the addition of Brett Favre as quarterback this summer meant there was no room on the 53-man roster for Booty. He was re-signed to the practice squad after no one picked him up off waivers.

Yeah, he’s no Matt Stafford or Matt Ryan. But he’s a body, and the Packers may need those at several positions as the season chugs along.

I think Packers traded a draft pick to the Vikings who then selected Booty with it.
