Packers’ Final Roster Takes Shape

Revell Martin was a surprise cut.

Since the Green Bay Packers full list of roster moves is about to be official, we’ll be updating the list at the top of the site from here on out.

Cut: defensive lineman Dean Muhtadi, tackle Dane Randolph, linebacker Cyril Obiozor, cornerback Trevor Ford, running back Kregg Lumpkin, defensive end Ronald Talley, quarterback Brian Brohm, tackle Andrew Hartline, running back Tyrell Sutton, tackle Jamon Meredith, wide receiver Jake Allen, wide receiver Kole Heckendorf, linebacker Danny Lansanah, defensive end Alfred Malone, wide receiver Ruvell Martin, safety Anthony Smith, cornerback Joe Porter, and defensive tackle Anthony Toribio.

Injured Reserve: Pat Lee, Justin Harrell, Charlie Peprah, Evan Moore

Trade: offensive lineman Tony Moll to the Baltimore Ravens for cornerback Derrick Martin

The biggest surprises to me were the release of Anthony Smith and Ruvell Martin.

Smith seemed to be pushing Atari Bigby for his starting spot, and made more plays than Bigby did in the preseason by a large margin. Smith’s release means that the Packers backups at safety are Aaron Rouse, who looked like he was in real jeopardy of losing his job, and Jarrett Bush, who continues to defy the laws of common sense by remaining on the team. How the Packers keep Bush over Smith… well, I’m dumbfounded, stupified and any other idiotic adjective you want to use to describe me.

Martin had proven himself a valuable contributor in the few opportunities he received as the Packers fifth receiver last season. He also made plays during the preseason, but the Packers chose to go with the younger Brett Swain. I made the comment last week that Martin was the best fifth receiver in football and could probably be a fourth or third on a lot of other teams. It looks like he will now get that chance. I’m sorry to see Martin go.

Lastly, some will say it was a surprise that Brian Brohm got released. I wouldn’t be one of those people. Brohm performed terribly two straight preseasons. There was no reason to keep him on the roster and I doubt there will be a big market for his services. The Packers could bring him back on the practice squad, but I feel like that’s a stretch, too. It’s too bad Brohm never could get it together.

Tackle Andrew Hartline, running back Tyrell Sutton and tackle Jamon Meredith have been released by the Packers.

———–

The Packers have announced the acquisition of Derrick Martin. However, previous reports that the team traded a late round draft choice for Martin were inaccurate. The team actually traded offensive lineman Tony Moll for Martin.

———–

The Green Bay Press Gazette is reporting that the Packers will release defensive end Ronald Talley. They are also insinuating that safety Charlie Peprah will also be released and paid an injury settlement.

Fifteen to go.

———–

The Packers will release quarterback Brian Brohm, according to the National Football Post, a move we predicted on Thursday.

If the Packers plan on adding a third quarterback, some possibilities include Damon Huard, who was released by San Francisco, and John David Booty, who was just released by Minnesota.

Seventeen to go.

———–

The Green Bay Packers have begun to trim their roster.

While not a lot has been reported yet, the Packers have made some moves.

Out are defensive lineman Dean Muhtadi, tackle Dane Randolph, linebacker Cyril Obiozor, cornerback Trevor Ford, and running back Kregg Lumpkin (which was first reported by the National Football Post).

The Packers also acquired cornerback Derrick Martin from the Baltimore Ravens for a late round draft choice in 2010.

Eighteen players are still waiting for a pink slip.
