That’s right, it’s Tuesday, and you know what that means at Total Packers – tackle-related news day!
Yes, it’s that exciting day when we discuss what’s going on with the Green Bay Packers’ right and left tackle positions, and boy, have we got some humdingers for you this week!
First, to left tackle where the Journal Sentinel’s Tom Silverstein tells us that Chad Clifton may play this week after injuring his ankle against the Cincinnati Bengals in week two. That’s great news, Tom!
“We’re going to give him a shot,” McCarthy said of Clifton. “He’s feeling a lot better, made a lot of progress in the rehab last week. We’ll see how he is at the end of the week. He’s going to have to practice if he’s going to play.”
Clifton was initially projected to be out for two weeks.
Now, to right tackle where NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora tells us the Packers worked out former Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Levi Jones. That’s tremendous, Jason!
Jones has years of starting experience at left tackle, but the Packers have been looking more for help at right tackle — where Allen Barbre has struggled. Packers starting left tackle Chad Clifton missed Sunday’s game with a high ankle sprain but is working to get back. Jones is one of the higher caliber free agent offensive linemen still available.
Higher caliber free agent offensive linemen available = in a pen full of pigs, Jones is the one with the bow on.
The Bengals didn’t offer Jones a contract this offseason, which is indicative of his play the past two seasons in Cincinnati. On the other hand, Barbre hasn’t played well for the Packers… ever. So flip a coin as far as I’m concerned.
On the positive side for Barbre, he is 25 to Jones 30, so he has at least five more years than Jones does to play the tackle position terribly.
