Ed. note: Consider this the post-St. Patrick’s Day hangover edition of Total Packers and please forgive me if I am missing my normal wit. I drowned it in Jameson last night.
On the heels of their biggest and stupidest move of the offseason, the Green Bay Packers re-signed two more guys that they don’t really need – defensive ends Mike Montgomery and Jason Hunter.
Montgomery had a decent season last year (59 tackles, 2.5 sacks) while filling in for the injured Cullen Jenkins, but he’s too small to play defensive end in the 3-4 system. At 275, Montgomery will need to add about 25 pounds to fit the mold.
Montgomery signed a two-year deal.
Hunter, who was a restricted free agent and is lighter than Montgomery, will move to outside linebacker in the 3-4, a move that we expect to have no impact on the anything at all.
There are, of course, a lot of people clamoring for the Packers to sign someone else’s free agents, but there isn’t much on the market at this point besides used parts. To make matters worse, there are few available players that even fit the 3-4, so there’s no reason to expect much free agency news out of Green Bay.
On another front, Pro Football Weekly is reporting that the Packers are unlikely to re-sign tackle Mark Tauscher:
With the Packers thinking Mark Tauscher probably won’t be ready to play again until the 2009 halfway point following his mid-January knee surgery, team sources tell us the free-agent tackle remains a long shot to be re-signed. As for the top candidate to possibly replace Tauscher as the starting right tackle, we hear it probably no longer is second-year pro Breno Giacomini, who is expected to miss a substantial portion of the team’s offseason program after undergoing arthroscopic ankle surgery Feb. 11. Word is the most likely scenario could be moving either Daryn Colledge, the starting left guard last season, or second-year pro Josh Sitton outside.
The prospect of Sitton or Colledge starting at right tackle is somewhat worrisome, but Colledge, who I would expect to win the job, did play tackle in college.
The Packers also need to look at the offensive line in the draft, but until then, we’ll just be sitting around with our thumb in our butt.
