Jarrett Bush – You’re Cut!

Aaron Rodgers sacked
This about sums it up.

From the “I Got 99 Problems But a Bitch Ain’t One” file came this past Saturday night’s preseason loss (34-6) to the disgustingly bad (5-11, last year) San Francisco 49ers.

First, having witnessed this debacle first hand, I have to say, Jarrett Bush – you’re cut!

It seemed each time I looked up from my Miller Lite, Bush was getting beaten. This was a guy that was supposed to be in contention for the nickel cornerback spot, and after Tramon Williams played well last week, Bush went out on the field at Candlestick Point and shat his pants.

Bush gave up completions of 22 and 27 yards and also blew a coverage, along with Nick “Communication?” Collins that lead to rookie Josh Morgan’s 59-yard TD reception just before halftime. My feelings were summed up best in Sunday’s Journal Sentinel game recap:

“God, is he bad,” another scout said after watching Bush for 60 minutes.

That’s not all that was bad though, as the first team offense sucked it up for the entire first half. A lot of people want to point the finger at Aaron Rodgers, who did make some bad throws, held the ball too long, and generally looked indecisive. However, Rodgers was sacked four times and the group we are trying to pass off as an offensive line more closely resembled a sieve.

Jason Spitz gave up two sacks in his third position on the offensive line this preseason (right guard, center, left guard). Meanwhile, rookie Josh Sitton has taken over at right guard, leaving us all to wonder just how atrocious Daryn Colledge and Allen Barbre really are (by the look of Sitton, they wouldn’t make the Dolphins’ second team).

At this point, all we can hope is that the unit settles in and begins to gel, as Mike McCarthy said today he isn’t making any changes. With two weeks left in the preseason, the other option (benching the rookie) sends us into the regular season with a unit that has played together for only a week.

Another poor performance could force the coaching staff to return Spitz to right guard and reopen the competition between Barbre and Colledge at left guard.

Finally, from the “Matt Millen – How to Build Through the Draft” file, conspiracy theorists are suggesting that the 49ers, who chose quarterback Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick three years ago instead of Aaron Rodgers, wanted nothing more than to make Rodgers look bad on Saturday night so the team’s brass didn’t look so… Millenesque.

There’s talk that the 49ers game-planned on defense with one primary goal in mind — to not make the Niners look any worse for picking Alex Smith over Rodgers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft.

Interesting theory, as the 49ers defense seemed to be coming after Rodgers like gangbusters. But I will offer this nugget – the 49ers were 5-11 last year and are currently starting our former third-string quarterback, J.T. O’Sullivan. Could they really look any worse?

I’ll leave that up to you. All I know right now is that Jarrett Bush – you are fucking cut!
