I don’t trust Roger Goodell.
I never believed he was committed to properly punishing the New England Patriots for spying last year and I think he’s a guy who’s more interested in the perceived image of the league than actual integrity. And while he has thrown the book at criminal players and substance abusers, he continually covers up indiscretions at the executive level with a “nothing to see here folks” attitude.
He swept the Patriots fiasco under the rug last year. Twice. And now, with the tampering charge the Green Bay Packers have filed against the Minnesota Vikings, I bet you dollars to donuts that the Vikings, even in the face of a humiliating amount of evidence, will get off Scott free.
You see, Goodell runs a business. He wants drama and ratings. In other words, Goodell wants Favre to play in Minnesota. Desperately. And he will now do whatever he can to make it happen.
Favre coming out of the visitor’s tunnel in Green Bay on Monday night, wearing purple no less – the ratings for that broadcast would break every Monday night ratings record and then break them again by halftime. It’s ESPN and the NFL’s wet dream.
Do you want proof that Goodell has started to pull the strings?
Today it is has been reported that the commissioner has ordered the Packers to resolve the issue quickly, thereby putting the Packers against the wall and completely stripping any leverage they would have had with another team. The Packers should at least get second and fifth-round draft picks as dictated by the Jason Taylor trade. Why the hell is the commissioner getting involved in the contractual dealings of teams and players. Why is Favre the exception?
I believe Goodell is hoping the Packers will not receive any attractive offers from teams like Tampa. With Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy backed into a corner, Favre will apply for reinstatement. Then Goodell, Favre and possibly the NFLPA will publicly demand a resolution. With no more options, the Packers will be forced by those entities to release him, clearing the way for Brett Favre to join the Minnesota Vikings.
If this happens, Brett Favre will be dead to me.
