Although the Green Bay Packers have given every indication they plan to re-sign kicker Mason Crosby, who will be a free agent when the lockout ends, things don’t always go according to plan. It’s conceivable, although probably not likely, another team will do something to pry Crosby away from the Packers. In that scenario, the team may be forced to turn to a familiar face — former kicker Ryan Longwell.
The Green Bay Packers are made some strange moves on Wednesday, when they tendered free-agents-to-be guard Daryn Colledge, kicker Mason Crosby and fullback John Kuhn.
Colledge and Crosby received second-round tenders and Kuhn received the lowest tender.
Here’s why all none of this makes any sense.
While several NFL teams have been slapping the franchise tag on their players, the Green Bay Packers won’t be using theirs.
There was speculation the Packers might use the tag on defensive end Cullen Jenkins or kicker Mason Crosby, both pending free agents, but Ted Thompson obviously thought the cost was too great.
With Desmond Bishop receiving a contact extension, defensive end Cullen Jenkins should be the top priority for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have several key players who are scheduled to be free agents under the current system, which is expected to be extended at some point. In addition to Jenkins, they include fullbacks John […]
There’s a headline you probably never thought you’d see, but it isn’t a mistake. As we pointed out in our post-game analysis, punter Tim Masthay had a killer game in the Green Bay Packers 9-0 defeat of the New York Jets. At the time, we called him the game MVP. Today, there’s word Masthay will […]
Another week, another player of the week award for the Green Bay Packers. Cornerback Charles Woodson captured the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week award, an award he won twice last season, for his play against Detroit. Woodson recorded 14 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown against the Lions in his best game […]
The Green Bay Packers look like a poorly-coached football team again, but forget about the team-record penalties and the special teams breakdowns for a second. The Packers may have had a chance to win or tie the Chicago Bears on Monday night if it weren’t for what I would term two terrible coaching decisions by […]
For the second week in a row, a member of the Green Bay Packers has nabbed an NFC player of the week honor. This time, linebacker Clay Matthews won the defensive award. Kicker Mason Crosby won the special teams award following week one. Matthews had three sacks and five tackles against the Buffalo Bills in […]
Last year, everyone (me included) wanted to tar and feather Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby. What a difference a year makes. It’s early in the season, but Crosby has been nothing short of… dare I say it… outstanding through the preseason and week one. Today, Crosby was recognized for his performance in week one […]
Maybe it’s time to table the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl talk for a bit. The defense, led by linebacker Clay Matthews, was the biggest reason the Packers were able to escape Philadelphia with a 27-20 win over the Eagles. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense wasn’t close to firing on all cylinders, but […]
The Green Bay Packers offense is potent, we knew that, but in their longest outing of the preseason against last year’s AFC champs, they put any doubts to rest. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who I have a hard time believing isn’t on his way to becoming the best player in the NFL, cut up the Colts […]
The weather man was wrong. It’s sunny and 85 degrees about an hour before practice. Quick observations: – There is a lot of talk here in Green Bay on the Brett Favre retirement. My thoughts — he stays retired until September 9th when, while mowing the lawn, he decides to drive the lawnmower to the […]
One thing that irritates me about Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson is their blind faith in certain players who just aren’t very good. See Jarrett Bush as example one. Example two is kicker Mason Crosby. Despite coming off the worst season in his mediocre professional career, Crosby is getting […]
You know it’s a slow day if we have to write about kickers. You remember those guys who don’t do anything but come out and piss the game away by missing a field goal while time runs off the clock, don’t you? Enter Mason Crosby. How many games did he cost the Green Bay Packers […]
From the You’re A Rich Athlete, Watch Your Ass Files comes this number: several members of the Green Bay Packers were interviewed as part of the investigation of two alleged sexual assaults at a Lake Delton condo. The incident apparently took place early Saturday morning, after The McGovern Charity Golf Tournament held in nearby Wisconsin […]
One thing you can bet on when you’re watching the Green Bay Packers’ draft unfold under the mastermind that is Ted Thompson, is that Thompson will come out with more picks than he went in with. In Thompson’s five drafts with the Packers, he’s traded back to pick up additional picks in each year except […]
Earlier this month, Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby was given a 100 percent raise, something we learned from our friend Jersey Al. Somehow Crosby triggered incentives in his contract that doubled his salary from $500,000 to $1 million, despite being one of the worst regular kickers in the NFL in 2009. Crosby made a […]
Green Bay Packers’ kicker Mason Crosby had a terrible year in 2009 and the team was reluctant to make a change down the stretch, with good reason. There wasn’t a kicker on the market who was any better. Crosby made a career-worst 75 percent of his field goals. That ranks him 25th in the league […]
2009 is done and gone (thank god for that), and it’s the time of year when many people set themselves up for failure by making New Year’s resolutions. I imagine many on the Green Bay Packers’ coaching staff do the same, so we here at Total Packers have compiled some suggestions of what we think […]
Slumping Green Bay Packers’ kicker Mason Crosby did what he was supposed to do Sunday in the team’s 48-10 blowout of the Seattle Seahawks – make field goals and extra points. But you’d think he pitched in as quarterback or hit a 70-yard, game-winning kick the way everyone – including Green Bay Press-Gazette columnists Pete […]
