Remember last offseason when the Philadelphia Eagles crowned themselves Super Bowl champions before the season even began?
Yeah, that “Dream Team” finished 8-8.
Well, now the Chicago Bears are crowning themselves paper champions in June. Or at least linebacker Lance Briggs is.
“On paper, we look like a champion, but we have a lot of work to do before we can be called a champion,” Briggs said. “There were moves that were made in the offseason to bring in a lot of veteran (players). Of course, Brandon Marshall and Michael Bush just put us in a position where we’re able to transition that stuff onto the field to be a real contender.”
Let’s all run and mark them down for a Super Bowl win!
Really, this is the kind of statement I love. Instead of saying, “Hey, we made some nice moves in the offseason and I like our chances,” some idiot, without fail, crowns his team in June or July before a down of football has been played.
That it happens to be the Green Bay Packers chief rival is even better. It will be better still when the Bears miss the playoffs.
Have they made improvements? I guess. Their receiving corps couldn’t get any worse, so adding Marshall won’t hurt even if he punches some broad in the face and gets suspended for half the season. Signing Bush was a decent move, although they’d be wise to pony up and pay their offense — a guy who goes by the name of Matt Forte.
Forte is still unsigned and could hold out.
Oh, and then there’s that shitty offensive line and that secondary that scares no one, except maybe small children. Maybe Marshall can play DB and Bush can play tackle.
