Brett Favre is about to lose one of his all-time passing records. It’s not the one for interceptions. It’s the one for touchdown passes. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is going to blow by that record sometime this season.
Maybe, if the fantasy football gods are smiling upon me, that will happen this week.
Favre finished his career with 508 touchdown passes. Manning currently sits at 503 and he faces the Jets this weekend, who both you and I know couldn’t cover a bed if they were a blanket.
Lord Favre, knowing he’s going to lose one of his records, is being pretty gracious about it, which is totally against his me-first nature.
“I’m glad it’s Peyton that’s doing it. I think a lot of Peyton. I know him well. I know his family well. His dad was one of my idols,” Favre told the AP.
I don’t know if I’m more surprised at Favre or that the Associated Press is still around. I think the latter…
Here’s an organization that once threatened to sue bloggers if they used too much of their content. In other words, very forward-thinking, but I digress.
Please don’t sue me, AP!
Now, we’ve seen athletes be pretty protective of their records in the past. Eric Dickerson and his single-season rushing mark comes to mind. He was openly rooting against that child abuser Adrian Peterson when he surpassed 2,000 yards a few years back.
Of course, Favre probably sees getting passed by Manning as inevitable. He would literally have to cheer for the guy to suffer a career-ending injury to not break his records. And he’s probably totally doing that when no one’s around, but publicly he’s a swell guy about it.
There’s a decent chance Manning will surpass all of Favre’s major records if he plays a little longer. Well, with the exception of that interceptions record.
That bad boy is safe.
