The Green Bay Packers really liked what they saw from undrafted tight end Mitchell Henry last year during camp.
We heard raves about his ability as a pass catcher. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to get him a roster spot. The Packers released Henry during final cuts with the intention of signing him to the practice squad. That possibility never materialized because the Denver Broncos signed him to their active roster first.
But everything is circular in the NFL, isn’t it?
The Broncos dumped Henry in October and the Packers got their wish. They signed him to the practice squad for the remainder of the season.
So now Henry will go into his second camp with the Packers hoping to nail down a roster spot. To do so, he will have to beat out Justin Perillo, another former undrafted free agent who was on the Packers’ active roster last season, and 2015 sixth-round pick Kennard Backman, who got only about 10 snaps on offense over the course of his rookie season.
We’ve been hearing nothing about those two guys this offseason, but we have been hearing about Henry.
A couple nice catches for TE Mitchell Henry today. He could be a nice third option behind Rodgers and Cook. #Packers

#Packers TE Mitchell Henry is a big target in middle of the field, moves reasonably well. Keep an eye on him in preseason and training camp.

He also did this the other day in Jordy Nelson’s softball game. The fact that Henry was even invited to participate in the game might suggest that he has a decent shot to make the team or at least that he’s kissing the right asses.

As with most young tight ends, it likely comes down to blocking for Henry.
If he can do that and present a big target over the middle of the field, then the Packers might have something here.
