It’s safe to say everyone has high hopes for Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams in year two.
Those hopes have been ratcheted up considerably by Adams himself. Not by anything he’s said — everyone says this is their year — but by his behavior and performance. Adams not only looks like the real deal, he’s turned plenty of heads on the field too, from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to coach Mike McCarthy.
And while we normally don’t pay any attention to guys who get singled out before training camp — Brandon Underwood, anyone? — there does seem to be something special about Adams.
McCarthy sounded awfully impressed with Adams, on Tuesday.
“I would say Davante Adams, if you wanted a clear illustration of a player taking a jump in his second year, you just saw it. He’s been tremendous in OTAs and he has more in front of him. He’s done a great job in strength and conditioning. If you picked a MVP or an All-Star, he’d be at the top of the list.”
Bam!
MVP of the offseason!
Adams had a decent rookie season, with 38 catches for 446 yards and three touchdowns. It was highlighted by his 121-yard effort against the Patriots.
If you do the math there, you also realize there were games — many of them — where Adams was a complete non-factor.
It’s early, but all signs point to that changing this season.
The Packers were top heavy, with two great wideouts and a bunch of guys in 2014. This year, we expect them to more closely resemble the great group they had when Donald Driver and Greg Jennings were at their peaks and Jordy Nelson and James Jones were doing great things in secondary roles.
Adams will be key to making that happen.
