And it’s perhaps the only thing they got right. Brett Favre is pleased that the Green Bay Packers decided to unveil his retired number inside Lambeau Field against the Chicago Bears.
Favre, who isn’t happy with the way the Packers handled a number of things related to his Packers Hall of Fame induction and number retirement, told reporters as much on Wednesday.
“I felt like that was the right fit,” Favre said. “The tradition and the history between the Bears [and Packers] dates back long before any of us were around. Just some fun games and rivalries over the years, and so being a Thanksgiving game, just the magnitude of that in itself is huge. And to me, it’s just the right fit, the right choice.”
Well, thank the lord!
Brett approves!
As you surely know, Favre has been a royal pain in the ass for the Packers organization during this whole process. Of course, the Packers organization and the Hall of Fame totally bumbled the situation from the beginning, so it isn’t as if they should go blameless.
Favre wanted his induction ceremony held inside Lambeau Field. The Hall slated it for the Lambeau Field Atrium just like they always do, then sold all the tickets to corporate sponsors and were like, “Oh, sorry fans!” That prompted Favre to publicly suggest his preference for the event and, in the process, made the organizers look like even bigger bozos than they already appeared to be.
Ultimately, the totally craptacular compromise of letting fans buy tickets to watch the induction on the video boards in the bowl was announced. Favre wasn’t totally pleased.
Then, Favre asked to hold his charity flag football game at Lambeau Field on July 19. The Packers said no. The company line is Favre’s event is too close to the Kenny Chesney concert being held at Lambeau on June 20 — yeah, almost a full month beforehand — and to the start of training camp at the end of July.
Considering a charity flag football game is going to harm the field about as much as the walking tours the Packers charge people for, these clowns are probably just sticking it to Favre for making them look like assholes. And that kind of makes them look like bigger assholes.
But whatever. That’s no news to us.
