Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t lead the league in any major statistical categories, but that didn’t matter, as Rodgers took home his second NFL MVP award Saturday night.
In 2014, Rodgers threw for 4,381 yards, 38 touchdowns and five interceptions, and had a 112.2 rating. He was seventh in yards, third in touchdowns and second in rating.
The MVP award, of course, is about more than statistics. It’s about how important a player is to his team’s success and Rodgers is arguably the most important player in the NFL in that category.
The award that is about statistics — the Offensive Player of the Year award — went to Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray, who led the NFL with 1,845 rushing yards.
Rodgers was also up for the NFL Man of the Year award, which went to Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.
Rodgers also won the NFL’s MVP award for the 2011 season. He is one of five Packers to take the honor. The others are Paul Hornung (1961), Jim Taylor (1962), Bart Starr (1966) and Brett Favre (1995-97).
Rodgers got 31 of 50 votes. Houston’s J.J. Watt’s was second with 13. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (two), Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (two), Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (one) and Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner (one) also received votes.
