Look, first of all, we”ve got nothing against gingers. In fact, we”re big fans. So long as they look something like this.
Not this.
Or this.
That last ginger is Green Bay Packers punter Tim Masthay. And he”s just fine so long as he”s doing the one job that he gets paid to do — kicking the damn football adequately.
But Masthay didn”t do much of that during the 2014 season. While he wasn”t completely awful, he did post the worst net average of his career (37.0). He also set a career low in punts inside the 20 (14) and a career high in blocks (2). That last stat wasn”t entirely his fault, but Masthay seemed to casino online regress as the season went on.
And so, the Packers did what they did with kicker Mason Crosby after his worst season as a pro. They put this ginger sonofabitch on notice by bringing in some competition.
That competition comes in the form of former Alabama punter Cody Mandell, who was signed on Monday.
Masthay hasn”t had any competition for his job since 2010 and it”s obviously made him soft. Like Andy Dalton soft.
Mandell averaged 42.6 yards per punt during his four years with the Tide. He was briefly in camp with Dallas last season before being released. Mandell probably won”t end up beating out Masthay for a job, but his signing sends a clear message.
You better start working again, gingy!
