The Green Bay Packers have another team potentially trying to poach one of their executives. Senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith is drawing interest from Washington.
In fact, they’ve requested permission to interview him, according to the Washington Post.
Washington has a new general manager in Scot McCloughan. He and Highsmith worked together in Green Bay from 1994-99, when both were college scouts under Ron Wolf.
McCloughan hasn’t made any changes to Washington’s personnel staff since taking over as general manager on January 9. However, it’s entirely possible that he’ll clean house after the draft, which would potentially mean a promotion for Highsmith.
Of course, unlike Eliot Wolf, who drew interest from the Eagles for their in-name-only general manager position, the Packers can and are expected to deny Washington permission to talk to Highsmith.
The absence of an opportunity to become another team’s general manager gives the Packers the right to do so. In lieu of letting Highsmith interview elsewhere, the Packers would likely throw a fancier title and more money at him.
