ESPN the Magazine just released a profile on now-retired Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez. It’s not terribly flattering, but that’s beside the point. There’s an interesting anecdote involving Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett in it.
According to Gonzalez, Burnett had some choice words for him when the Falcons played the Packers in early December.
Those words were as follows: “Fuck you. You ain’t shit.”
This turned out to be an important moment during the season for Gonzalez and it was important to the story as well. Gonzalez says he decided right there and then that he wouldn’t return for the 2014 season because none of his teammates came to his defense.
Burnett, meanwhile, denies the incident even happened.
“I don’t know where this is coming from or who said it, but I work real hard on and off the field to build a good a reputation around the league, and I’ve got too much respect for the game to even say something like that,” Burnett said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “I’ve got too much respect for myself. I’ve got a 4-year-old son who looks up to me. I respect someone like Tony Gonzalez, who’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer, to ever say or do anything like that.”
It sounds like Gonzalez has his Packers mixed up. Burnett also pointed out that he didn’t cover Gonzalez during the game.
Who could have been covering him and hurling insults? Well, both M.D. Jennings and Sean Richardson played in that game. Tramon Williams seems like a possibility as well, since he’s the Packers most physical corner.
The smart money says it was Jennings, though. Burnett wears No. 42. Jennings wears No. 43. Pretty easy to get mixed up.
