Green Bay Packers Manage to Get Uglier in Loss to New York Giants

Jason Pierre-Paul returns a pick against the Green Bay Packers

Man, that was terrible. Ugly game to watch and that’s because both of the teams playing really suck, it turns out. The Green Bay Packers have now been taken to the woodshed two weeks in a row by two teams from the worst division in football, the NFC East. The New York Giants did the honors on Sunday, beating the Packers 27-13.

The Packers largely lost for one reason. Quarterback Scott Tolzien threw three picks. One of those went directly to defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who returned the gift 24 yards in the fourth quarter to put the Giants up two touchdowns and essentially end the game.

Oddly, it was the same play call that Seneca Wallace threw an interception to Julius Peppers in the Packers loss to the Bears. So, maybe stop calling that fucking play, huh, Mike?

Other than the picks, Tolzien didn’t look that bad. He threw for 339 yards on the day and was accurate, especially with the deep ball. Jordy Nelson and Jarrett Boykin were the primary beneficiaries of that. Jordy had 8 for 117 and Boykin had 6 for 91.

Unfortunately, the Packers weren’t able to get anything on the ground against a stout Giants defensive line. Eddie Lacy finished with just 27 yards on 14 carries. That’s 1.9 per.

The offensive line was awful in the run game. They got no push whatsoever and Lacy was hit in the backfield almost every time he touched the ball, as evidenced by the Giants’ five tackles for loss (none of which were sacks).

Meanwhile, the Packers defense actually made some plays for a change. Tramon Williams had a pick and eight tackles. Apparently Tramon got the message about poor tackling because he was solid in this game. The Packers also got four sacks and Clay Matthews started showing signs of his old self.

Unfortunately, no one other than Tramon actually got the message about tackling. It was more of the same in that area — watching the opposing offensive players drag Green Bay defenders for five yards after initial contact or watching them just bounce off and keep running.

How many weeks does the coaching staff have to emphasize tackling before these idiots actually get it?

Another recurring theme was opposing receivers running wide open down the field. Again, Tramon had a decent day, but he’s about the only guy in the secondary who did. It certainly didn’t help that Sam Shields was a scratch, either.

Victor Cruz was the main guy to torch the Packers secondary, racking up 8 for 110. Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle certainly had their moments where they were running wide open too, though.

Ultimately, this all added up to the Giants maintaining a 10-minute time of possession advantage on the day. Oh, and that’s another recurring theme.

It’s what happens when you can’t run the ball and your defense can’t tackle anyone and get off the field. Case in point, the Giants were 2-for-2 on fourth down conversions.

The Packers lost to a bad team on Sunday. And that’s because the Packers are a bad team, right now.

The Packers are more than just a “bad team” right now. They are like a team without a cause or purpose. They play with little drive or energy. I look to see if anyone, any player is actually doing his job out there. I am no football expert. But it doesn’t take an expert to see when a team is not putting forth much effort to win games. Rodgers could not have had that much pull in the locker room could he? Seriously? Do these men not have any self-motivation whatsoever? I cannot see things changing much even when Rodgers does return. The season is done. Call it what you want, lack of effort, lack of interest, basically….fuck the fans.

    • Savage57

They reflect the attitude, courage and resolve of their coach.

After getting their ass beat down on the playground, once they get done wiping the blood away, they come back and front up with a challenge, “Oh yeah!, well I can beat you at jacks!”

  2. Deepsky

Is it just me, or does it seem like the entire NFL except for about 4 teams range somewhere between horrible and average. In the NFC Central an average team will probably win it.

    • icebowl

Point taken D. Bears and Lions will fight it out and end up w 9-7 record.
BTW: it’s now called NFC NORTH

  3. GBslacker

As I watched, I kept thinking: men vs. boys; pros vs. college, dads vs. sons. The Packers just seemed weaker, slower, lighter, smaller than their opponent.

Perhaps the poster on JS said it best: “Special Olympians.”

You may think it cruel of me, but I don’t think the defensive players have the intellect to run zone coverages — how to pickup and handoff an opponent. At times it seems they’re afraid to make a play lest they vacate an assigned area. It’s like a “pylon” defense — it looks like they’re in the right place to make a play, but then nothing.

Even though Tolzien had 3 picks, I still thought he looked better than any backup QB they’ve had in recent years, including Flynn.

  4. tedtomato

Mcfatty..you are sooooo full of shit..big talk last week about big changes..blah blah blah..total fucking bullshit!! Same shit..same crappy no cover..no tackle..no sack bullshit..go suck s turd! You dum perry campen slocum and witt can bullshit each other in the unemployment line!!!

    • Savage57

Sorry, but it’s on the defense. When you lose TOP 36 to 25 minutes, that’s on the pussies that like to get pushed around and enjoy being someone’s bitch week after week.

Doesn’t matter who the next QB or the RB is, they see GB on the schedule and they call NFL Films and tell ’em to send the film crew for a highlight reel.

  5. PackAttack

These loses clearly proove that Ted Thompson is the most overrated GM in the game. Thanks to catching lightning in a bottle with Rodgers in ’05, the talent of one player has helped masked the problems everywhere else on this pathetically pieced together team. He’s had opportunities to fix the defense, hasn’t done it. Hasn’t fixed the O-line, hasn’t fixed the coaching issues. Nothing. What’s he done to help this team in any area since the draft???? Its on him. This team is literally dead without Rodgers. Dead. One player is the full composition of an entire franchise. No leaders. No playmakers on D. The whole “homegrown” bullshit is getting fucking old. Who gives a shit about where these guys come from, they can’t fucking play.

Scott Tolzien? Are you fucking kidding me with this guy.

If Rodgers doesnt play next week the season is lost before Week 12. Play or go home.

  6. CA

We had 8 starters out PackAttack you dumb fuck, including #12. No other team in the league could be competitive if they were in the packers shoes.

Brad Jones should never play another down. Dude is awful and it blows my mind they still trot him out there.

      • valpoPackers

If the Packers hadn’t signed Tolzien, they would have lost him to the Browns. Then you’d be bitching about how the Packers signed Harrell after watching him throw INTs to the Eagles and Giants.

  7. Phatgzus

CA, completely agree with the first, but the second is a bit of an overreaction in my mind-yeah Lattimore should probably be starting over Jones, but the dude also had 10 tackles including a sack, he’s not the worst of the Pack’s troubles, Tolzien throwing picks like baggies of coke at discotheques is.

  8. Phatgzus

As fans we certainly have the right to criticize “our” team, but if you’re willing to give up on the team you so dearly love when, despite the turmoil and tribulations they’re still within one game of winning the division title and making the Playoffs, then maybe you should address your own issues before focusing on those of others.

    • Vijay

Um, no…we won’t stop bitching. If you watched Peyton Manning tonight against a REAL defense (KC), he was hardly touched at all…but why is that? Because Elway is another GM who better understands what a team needs to win—Protect the Franchise!

It’s called Free Agency Ted–worked in the past and history says it works. Do you build a team that way, no. But you do plug holes when draft picks don’t progress as you hoped they would. Now stop signing “homegrown” bullshit to max deals and go get some real players. Vent over.

      • Phatgzus

Hey Vij, as good as Elway may be hendrafted only 1, count it that’s one, O-N-E, oooooonnnnnneee, of the O-lineman playing for the Donkeys. Once again (for the billionth time) conveniently neglected to mention that TT has drafted o-linemen in the 1st round twice in the past 4 years, as well as twice in relatively high rounds last year (including a legit ROY candidate at LT). Ashis job security is ultimately inextricably linked to Rodgers health, I think it’s quite possible he realizes the importance of competent o-linemen.

PS: dude, it’s Padawan-is an internet search engine really such an unsolvable enigma for you?

PPS: How’re the Falcons and their healthy franchise QB and amazing FA RB doing this year, or the Super-Bowl-Champion Ravens, or even the Saints last year?

        • Ivomitonvikingfans

I am sure TT realizes the importance, but can anyone argue he has accomplished anything but a barely serviceable line at best. Marshall Newhouse for fucks sake!! Are you kidding me? That 300 lb. wad of chewed bubble gum has no business being on any roster but, for some fucking reason, he is still on this one. At least TT got Sitton right. Another 10 drafts he might be able to fill the rest of the holes

So the Falcons suck. That surely means no team should pursue free agents ever again. If I recall that amazing FA RB had a few GM’s interested in signing him, including the infallible TT.

          • Phatgzus

Newhouse is only playing because 3 players ahead of him on the depth chart are injured, that said he needs to be gone next year as he’s nothing more than a turnstile.

I never said nor implied you should never acquire free agents, my response was directed at Vijay, a person who wants TT to grab an expensive FA for every potential injury or underperformed, please don’t take my comments out if context.

As for Jackson, I admit I would have liked to have seen him in green and gold, but at the right price. We can’t be certain as to TT’s exact intentions vis a vis Jackson, it is highly likely he had some level if interest in him but felt he wasn’t worth the price and rightfully passed on signing him.

I don’t believe TT is infallible (Harrell, Brohm, Hawk, etc.), so let’s not make accusations.

  9. Vijay

    Teddy T, Teddy T, Teddy T…#SMH

These fans deserve better! Tough, physical play makers needed everywhere!

Oh yeah, I forgot, he gets a pass due to “injuries”. And yeah, that backup QB lack of preparedness he admitted to? Hopefully, Scott improves a little week to week. But this team doesn’t seem able to rise to the occasion. Hmm, wonder what’s missing?

  10. Shawn Iltarion

Packers need Rodgers back just so they can be watchable again.

There is a lot of bad football being played in the NFL this year, and the Packers are right there in the thick of it.

If Derek Sherod isn’t good enough to supplant the woeful Marshall Newhouse, then he should be on the IR.

Apparently Sam Shields drank the water in GB and caught the hamstring bug. Or he and Drew Rosenhaus figure he’s shown enough to get paid next season and should just start sitting some games out, reduce his chance of major injury.

Tramon was all alone in that fricking secondary out there. Someone let me know when a Packer safety actually makes a play for once.

Our LBs were Andre Brown’s bitches today. On one play, Brown ran AJ Hawk right-the-fuck over and kept going. Frankly, our LBs and secondary almost looked scared of Brown.

This team has taken a crap in NY WITH Rodgers playing, so we probably shouldn’t be shocked now.

Regardless, as much an epic fail as this 3 game losing streak has been, get Rodgers back, beat the Vikings and then everything comes down to the game at Detroit.

  11. Vijay

There will be an excellent Free Safety in Jairus Byrd available after the season concludes if I’m not mistaken. That’s a stud you pay max money for.

    • Vijay

As far as giving up early draft picks, who cares when your early picks almost never seem to pan out? Give up a couple high draft picks and make a trade once in awhile. Sheesh.

  12. tedtomato

Pack your fucking bags capers! You can make all the excuses that you want for this guy..but how long are these breakdowns gonna be tolerated..and where are these changes that mcfatty was so adament about last week?

    • K.L.

I wish you would shut up. You sound like one loud-mouthed son-of-a-bitch. Funny how you and 90% of fans constantly whine so much when none of us know how hard it is to play in the NFL.

  13. tedtomato

Fuckin A it is..with an average defense..this team could win..without..well..we see the results. Good thing they overpaid burnett..wouldnt wanna see him go anywhere else! Lol. What a fucking turd!

  14. PackAttack

    CA,
You sir are a fucking moron. Crying that #12 is completely irrereplaceable and that no team could overcome the injuries bla bla bla bla. What about the shit happening right before your god damn face???? The Chicago Bears lose Cutler, Tillman, Briggs, McClellin, Melton, Collins yet they continue to play well and win despite numerous injuries they fucking man up and win. I don’t see McCown throwing 5 picks in 2 weeks, I don’t see the Bears D laying down, I don’t see any excuses coming outta Chicago. But all you do is make excuses about injuries when other teams in the same fucking division go through the same shit yet they win.

Get stepping CA. Go back to sea world boy.

  15. K.L.

Most of you sound like a bunch of clueless, loudmouth idiots. When you are all proved wrong eventually, you will then know exactly why you are not a GM in the NFL.

    • cd4packers

It doesn’t really matter if any of us are proved wrong. That’s not the point. Why do we come on these sports sites anyway if not to bitch and moan, or even praise. Hey, we know we are not GM’s or coaches. You are taking what people say on here too seriously. It’s fans opinions. Leave it at that. Everyone has the right to there opinon. Sure, you can agree or disagree if you like, but there is no good reason for you to start name calling. LMAO!

  16. rebelgb

I LOL’ed hard at the comments on this board. This is why there should be a sign up for commenting on this site so we can weed out the autistic mongaloids like Vijay and PackAttack.

Look idiots, im no MM fan, and I think Capers should be replaced; but I dont know how to get it through your fat ugly skulls: NO team sustains the kind of injuries the Packers have and wins. Jesus Christ himself could be your GM it wouldnt matter.

You cant lose Cobb, Finley, Shields, Heyward, Barclay, Rodgers, Jolly and still fucking win. Do I need to draw it in crayon??

Lets win at MN, get Aaron, Cobb, Shields and Barclay back and see how things go. Not saying we are going to the Super Bowl, but we at least become competitive again.

    • cd4packers

I agree with you to some extent. But, all teams have to account for injuries during any given season. That is just part of the NFL. And I know GB has definitely had their share. However, the Packers still need to try to win games. Acquiring worthy back-ups should be a priority. Especially when you have one of the best if not the best QB in the league on your team. To say that the Packers cannot win if they are missing 5 or 6 key players which is what you indicated above, is not going to fly with most organizations. If they believe that, then we truly are lost. I am just saying that I wish the back-ups would do their jobs. They are talented players as well or they would not be in the NFL. They should be required to put forth just as much effort as a starter. I don’t see that happening in many cases with our current back-up core. They should be able to go out on the field and get the job done. It was the crappy Giants for crying out loud. They suck.

  17. Savage57

If at the beginning of the season someone had posted that after week 11 the Packers would be looking up at the Bears, Panthers and Cardinals for a wild-card berth, who would have believed it?

  18. KregN.

Where’s that dumb azz that for the past few weeks has been saying, “Badgers win on Sat, then the Packers win on Sun.”
Someone tell him to stop spreading that moronic rumor.

  19. Ryan H

You’re all bitching like Vikings fans (shudders). Everyone calm down, take a deep breath and finish that 12 pack in the fridge.
We’ve been spoiled as Packer fans, year after year winning and making the playoffs. Between the injuries and poor coaching what do you expect? I for one will take a few loses if it means we can get rid of capers at the end of the year, I/we have wanted that since before the Super Bowl win.

  20. T Pack

Losing your starting QB can change a whole team. Defense is out there longer than usual. Offensive timing is out of whack. Then throw in 10-12 other starters (good or bad) and you will have a rough time winning. Giants have been on a roll. Even if they are just beating bad teams the teams confidence is high.
That being said things need to be changed. First off is Capers must go. This guy is out of touch and it looks like the defense doesn’t want to play for him.

But if we can win next week & Rodgers is back for Turkey day we can definitely beat the lions who lost to those horrible Steeler bumble bees and all will be fine in the Packerland.

  21. PACKATTACKINMPLS

Awesome now I can finally get back to reality and get some shit done around the house.
I could care less if they loose the rest of their games this year just as long as they beat the Fucking Queens…..
    HEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo

Back to the dark ages when splitting the series w da Bears was considered a successful season…..
My wife is ecstatic that I can get to honey-do list on Sundays.

  22. RGO

Guys, the defense on this team has been average at best or sucked more often than not the past three years. Capers has worn out his welcome in GB. Time for a change. While the ground game is better this year it still has a long way to go to take pressure off the passing game. Look, you know the Pack will lose to the Lions on Thanksgiving. If they end up 8-8 we will be lucky. The team had no heart. They play with no emotion. You saw that in the first few minutes of the game yesterday. Our key player is out so the expectation is that everyone else would step up their game. Well, the has not happened. The performance yesterday was pathetic. And where the hell has the pass rush been for the past decade!!!!!!!!????????

  23. NICK

Like I said last week, game after game ,year after year it is athe same old story,we get outcoached.I think it is time for an overhaul.Shareholders need to demand some changes.Lets start by getting rid of TT,I have never liked him.

  24. PF4L

Not one person here mentioned the woeful performance of the running game yesterday. The Giants line is just too strong for the Packers, as it has been in the past. I’m not gonna piss and moan about the defense, ect. That subject has been beat to death.

I will say. In spite of Tolzien’s 3 picks. I like this kid!! He has a gun. Show me a guy who throws for 339 yards in his 1st NFL start, and i’ll show you a player. I don’t know what Flynn has to offer anymore concerning his arm. But i hope they keep Tolzien around.

As far as the season goes. I hate the Packers losing. But it is what it is. Nothing i say will change it. I guess i look at a loss, as if that’s one more game closer to Capers being let go. Lets stop pretending we can run a 3-4, and get back to a 4-3.

Yeah, let’s blame the GM for the Packers not being able to win without with their 1st and 2nd string QB, starting LT, RT, WR, TE, and 2nd string RB… and defensively starting CB, backup CB, their top OLB in a cast, his backup out, his backup’s backup out, and a guy on the PUP list that would’ve been starting by now if healthy, and a variety of banged up defensive linemen like Jolly, Picket and Neal. This list, of course, doesn’t include players like Nick Collins and Desmond Bishop whom suffered injuries that either ended their career or limited the rest of their career. Give me a break. Name me a GM that’s able to plug in a 3rd string QB, CB, WR, TE, OLB and win consistently.
