Aaron Rodgers is Confident in his Tackles

Add Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the list of guys who are confident in the team’s tackles. Rodgers joins GM Ted Thompson in saying he isn’t worried about rookie David Bakhtiari, who’ll start at left tackle, and 2012 undrafted free agent Don Barclay, who will presumably start at right tackle.

During his Wednesday media session Rodgers was asked how high his confidence is in that group — a group that everyone else seems to have no confidence in.

“It’s very high, it’s very high. Don has played a lot for us, Marshall has obviously played a lot for us, and David is a very confident guy, who has a good set, and you just need to trust his fundamentals. He’s up against a Pro Bowl guy (Aldon Smith) who’s one of the best in the business, who is continuing to get better. You can see it on the film. He’s still as athletic as anybody, he’s playing the run really well and it’s a tough test, but that’s what you want. If you want to be considered an elite player at your position, like I know David does down the road. He’s a confident guy, then these are the kind of matchups you want.”

Well, I don’t know if that’s the matchup that we want.

Smith is coming off a season where he registered 19.5 sacks, so he’s going to be a load for Bakhtiari to handle. Barclay has the slightly easier task of facing Ahmad Brooks, who only had 6.5 sacks last season.

As Bakhtiari and Barclay go is probably how the Packers offense will go and make no doubt about it, these are two of the key matchups of Sunday’s game.

Rodgers was sacked an NFL-high 51 times last season.

MM will chip and double on that side, and they’ll screen to that side. They’ll do whatever they can to avoid Smith from having a big day.

They’ll do whatever they can, even the layman fan knows this is weakness vs strength. Should be interesting. Might see Rodgers release the ball all game in under 2 seconds.

I see our offensive line as upgraded, besides maybe the fact that Bakhtiari is a rookie. Anyone is better than Newhouse. Bakhtiari was definitely a find. Barclay has had a good training camp. I see no reason to be worried.

Without question, A-Rodge will not be worried about his tackles all the way up until he IS worried about his tackles.

Barclay is more than likely an upgrade over Newhouse, but that is not saying much. A lot of buzz about Bakhtiari, but I am not sure anyone really knows for sure except for scouts. I do know this–Leroy Butler says he is undersized for a tackle.
It is amazing we are have some promise of competing–one first draft a bust, the other goes down ina freak acl tear. For me, that is just further testament as to the acumen of our good friend and steward of the Packers organization, THE POLAR BEAR!

      • Neither of their injuries were the fault of the GM or the questionable medical staff. Bulaga has already shown much, and I got a feeling we’ll hear from Sherrod before this season is over. Hell, it’s even possible they are next opener’s starters.

really, what else is he supposed to say? “I hope I don’t have my ass handed to me” or “I think I’m going to be running for my life on every other play” doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

one thing for is for sure. we will see what kind of a NFL left tackle David Bakhtiari is right away. This will be one of his toughest matchups all year. I would expect some mistakes as he gains experience, but I think he’ll be pretty good. size-wise, I don’t know if there is much difference between 6′ 4″ 300lbs (Bakhtiari) and 6’5″ 314lbs (Bulaga), as an O lineman. a good chiropractor and some protein shakes could make up the difference right away.

I should have looked up Chewbacca’s stats. And I should stop listening to WSSP. Not my usual choice. .. but. …

Rodgers is just happy Newhouse isn’t protecting his blind side, anymore. But, c’mon…confident? Rodgers SAYS he’s confident in his tackles should have been the header, here. Not much else he can say at this point.
