The Green Bay Packers started releasing players today and backup quarterback Graham Harrell was one of the first to go.
And thank Christ.
The Packers gave Harrell an opportunity with the first string offense on Friday night and he did what he’s done all preseason — underwhelmed. Harrell was 6-for-13 for 49 yards. That’s a 56.2 rating.
Harrell also displayed his typical lack of accuracy and inability to throw the deep ball.
The move opens the door for NFL retread Vince Young to be Aaron Rodgers’ backup. Young, who’s still learning the offense, led the Packers to their only touchdown on Friday night — a one-yard toss to rookie Jonathan Amosa. Young was 6-for-7 for 41 yards and he also ran for 39 yards.
Young isn’t the most accurate guy, but he does bring an element of athleticism that Harrell clearly doesn’t have.
For the moment, the Packers still have B.J. Coleman on the roster too. Coleman probably won’t end up making the final roster, but could be a candidate for the practice squad for the second season in a row.
That’s where Harrell spent 2010 and 2011 before making the roster as the No. 2 last season.
