Packers Visiting With Cedric Benson
The Green Bay Packers will have free agent running back Cedric Benson in for a visit on Wednesday.
Does that mean they’re planning on re-signing Benson? We’ll see.
The team first needs to see if he’s recovered from the Lisfranc fracture that cost him the majority of the 2012 season. Benson suffered the injury in week four and didn’t play again. He’s reportedly almost fully recovered.
Benson had 248 yards and a touchdown for the Packers last season after being signed as a free agent late in training camp. He was the team’s only effective back until DuJuan Harris emerged late in the season.
Despite his effectiveness, Benson is 30 and probably doesn’t have a lot left in the tank. If the Packers signed him, it would be a short-term, veteran’s minimum kind of deal. Of course, no one has been banging down Benson’s door, so that would probably be just fine with him.
Another factor to keep in mind here is the draft. The Packers could be doing this as a smoke screen. If they were to sign Benson, that might suggest to other teams that they’re not interested in drafting a running back, when indeed they are. It could be a ploy, although we doubt anyone in Lambeau is that smart.
