Cullen Jenkins Signs with Giants
Not surprisingly, at least to us, defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins will not be returning to the Green Bay Packers. Jenkins signed a three-year deal with the New York Giants on Sunday.
Jenkins’ deal is worth $8 million, but only $3 million is guaranteed.
Although there was some suggestion that the Packers should be interested and the 32-year-old Jenkins said he was open to returning to Green Bay, the Packers didn’t show any interest. That’s not surprising, considering Ted Thompson showed zero interest in retaining Jenkins when he was a free agent in 2011.
Jenkins signed with the Eagles and had two relatively productive seasons before being released earlier this offseason.
The Giants, meanwhile, appear to be employing the strategy of “get older and cheaper” on the defensive line. New York released Chris Canty, who was scheduled to make $6.25 million in 2013, but is two years younger than Jenkins. They’ll also probably watch as Osi Umenyiora (31) walks in free agency.
Jenkins’ deal may ultimately set the market for Canty, who visited the Packers last week.
