Packers Are Soft, Says Everyone Not Named Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

You’ve heard the refrain. The Green Bay Packers are soft. They’re not physical. They get pushed around by tougher teams.

That’s what happens when you get shoved around, beat down and run over, around and through like the Packers did in their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. It’s also what happens when you give up 400-odd yards rushing to Adrian Peterson in two regular season games.

The 49ers and Minnesota Vikings are what people call tough, physical teams. Their offensive lines are stout, they run the ball effectively and so on.

Compared to those two grinding, punishing teams, the Packers look kind of like a fancy bottle of conditioner. Kind of… soft.

But don’t tell Mike McCarthy that. As usual, McCarthy sees absolutely nothing wrong with his football team.

Soft? Nonsense!

“To me, we’re a physical, tough football team,” McCarthy said at the combine. “I totally disagree. I don’t know how you can put the tape on and say the Green Bay Packers aren’t physical.”

Really? You don’t?

You and… no one else!

McCarthy went on to point to the Super Bowl run during the 2010 season as a measure of the Packers toughness, unaware that it happened two seasons ago with a different group of guys.

McCarthy then pointed to his stomach. “You want to see just how tough we are?” he said, pulling up his shirt. “We’re as rock solid, as tough as this midsection right here! You see those six-pack abs? Huh? Go ahead, tough ’em! Feel just how hardcore the Green Bay Packers are!”

Indeed.

I am so tired of this in denial coach,if you are so tough and physical how do you get your ass kicked 2 years in a row in the 1st round. What excuse do you have for me this time

    • GreenAndYellow

we can start with the fact that the pack didnt get their ass kicked in the 1st round this yr…they kinda won, handily

Being “soft” is one of those sports euphemisms with basically no meaning.

It is like having “no chemistry” or “not being hungry” or being “old.”

All of these things amazingly only exist when you lose.

When you win, instead of having “no chemistry” you have “character.” Instead of “not being hungry” you are “like a machine.” Instead of being “old,” you are “experienced.”

I agree with MM. Watch the Packers physically dominate the Bears in Lambeau and the Texans in Houston- two physical teams. Then say they are “soft.”

San Fran beat the Packers because their QB was too fast for the Packer defense. Just ask Ray Lewis, being “tough” doesn’t help you when a guy runs right by you.

The Packers haven’t had a defense capable of winning a Super Bowl since 2010. That’s the problem. Period.

    The rest is… intrigue.

Please go back to ripping on other teams and spare me the time for getting pissed off at a fellow Packers fan because he thinks its necessary to talk shit about his own team.

BD, If your looking for the bubble gum and rainbow packers site try the JS. Clearly there are some major problems with this team, if you think pointing them out is a problem GTFO.

When I hear him talk on this point, MM reminds me of the fat, stupid kid we all knew on the playground at school that thought he was tough, but on the rare occasions he actually got into a fight, all you had to do is drill him in the face the turn on the waterworks. Then a day later if you heard the kid talk, you’da thought he’da kicked everyone’s ass.

MM’s soft and by extension so is his entire team – typically both lines get owned and opposing players usually get positive yards when they’re tackled. I’m just tired of seeing the Packers turned into bitches by teams that do have some sand.

MM grew up in Pittsburgh and was favored by TT because of his toughness.

MM would have probably kicked your ass in HS.

      • Savage57

Then on that characteristic, TT was wrong. MM has a lot of great attributes, and I think he’s a great Monday to Saturday coach, but the guy and the team are inarguably soft. That’s the whole thesis of the subject under discussion.

Re-read the post, then you’ll get my position within that context. It’s about the tough talk idea when you’re really a pussy. Kind of like you.

And as to whether MM could’ve kicked my ass, I don’t know. But I do know I would’ve gotten my cuts in. There’s a reason for the nickname.

No, you are soft…Legendary FB Heath Evans explained that in their 5 or so losses, they were all to run the ball first teams who don’t zone block, they POWER block. The key here is to not over reach. Just focus on getting more scheme versatile playmakers at all levels of the defense and offense, and you’ll be fine…easier said than done, er?

  7. Richard

They were soft, but they are also a different team if Desmond Bishop and even Nick Perry are on the field hitting people and not on IR. A hard hitting safety would be welcomed this draft…
