Rodgers: James Jones Top Priority
Green Bay Packers quarterback [intlink id=”25″ type=”category”]Aaron Rodgers[/intlink] has a lot of weapons, but he clearly wants to keep one around everyone expected to leave as a free agent.
Rodgers put out the call for general manager [intlink id=”20″ type=”category”]Ted Thompson[/intlink] to get receiver James Jones back in the fold, Tuesday. He wasn’t subtle, either.
“James is extremely talented and he’s a guy that I think we need to bring back without a doubt,” Rodgers said. “He should be priority No. 1 and I mean that with all my heart. He really should be priority No. 1. We don’t win the Super Bowl without him and we need him.”
Asked about Jones’ well-documented drops last season, Rodgers said: “Physical mistakes can happen. Yeah, it’s frustrating, but James made a ton of big plays for us [last] season and I think his best football is in front of him.”
Despite Rodgers’ words, it’s doubtful Thompson agrees.
It’s understood the Packers top free agent priority is kicker Mason Crosby and everyone knows Thompson doesn’t take player input into account when making personnel decisions.
Just ask Brett Favre.
The Packers won’t overpay for Jones. If it so happens a market doesn’t develop for him or if he accepts what Thompson considers a fair contract, it’s possible Jones could return, although those scenarios don’t appear likely.
With his comments, Rodgers probably just made Jones richer.
