The talk of the Green Bay Packers trading for Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch isn’t quite dead yet, despite reports last week the Bills would not move him.
Late Monday, The Buffalo News reported talks for Lynch were intensifying. Lynch was the featured back in the Bills 34-7 loss to the Packers last Sunday, recording 17 carries and 64 yards. The Bills No. 1 running back, C.J. Spiller, received only one carry and their No. 2 back, Fred Jackson, got nine carries.
There was speculation the Bills were using the game to showcase Lynch for a potential trade. Interestingly, the Green Bay Packers played linebacker A.J. Hawk extensively against the Bills after he didn’t play at all in week one.
Other than his typical M.O. of taking bad angles and getting smoked by faster players, Hawk played a decent game, recording a team-high nine tackles.
The Buffalo News reports the Packers and Bills are discussing a Lynch-for-Hawk swap.
There are obstacles, however. The Bills are reportedly reluctant to trade Lynch because of Jackson’s potential for injury and their reluctance to overwork Spiller. Hawk’s $4 million salary could also prove to be a roadblock.
Then there are the general managers involved.
Packers GM Ted Thompson only likes players Ted Thompson drafted and may be content to stand by Brandon Jackson as the team’s No. 1 running back. At the very least, Jackson is likely to get a longer look as the main option in Green Bay because Thompson isn’t one to overreact.
Buffalo GM Buddy Nix rejected an offer of a third-round pick and a player for Lynch before the draft, so… he’s an idiot.
While I’d be surprised if anything materialized at all, I’d be even more surprised if something happened before Jackson gets another opportunity to prove himself.
