In perhaps the most unshocking news of the offseason, Brett Favre told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” he still doesn’t know if he’ll play again next season, and made it clear a decision won’t be coming anytime soon.
Pressed for his thoughts on playing in 2010, Favre said “Well Jay, it’s only been a month, and I know now that I’m just not going to say anything anytime soon, just going to kind of sit back, relax, enjoy the offseason.”
*YAWN*
The comments were Favre’s first since the Vikings’ 31-28 overtime loss to New Orleans on Jan. 24 in the NFC title game. Favre retired after the 2007 and 2008 seasons only to decide he wanted to return. Last season, Favre put off joining the Vikings until late August, after the team had broken training camp in Mankato, Minn.
Old Man Favre did tell Leno he thinks the loss at New Orleans will bother him for a “long time.”
Added Favre: “Obviously had we gone to the Super Bowl that would have been the icing on the cake, but it was way better than even I could have dreamed of. I’ve told people, I really believe my biggest accomplishment this year was winning over the majority of the Vikings fans. For so many years I was hated.”
*YAAAAAAWN*
So damn predictable.
And Favre’s indecision couldn’t have come as a surprise to the Vikings.
Coach Brad Childress told reporters at the scouting combine in Indianapolis last week that the team doesn’t mind waiting for Favre to decide on a 20th season.
“I’m pretty good with that,” Childress said. “And I think the thing is this — our team understands that, as well. The old not knowing, not knowing — you could question guys on our team and say, ‘Well, would it be nice to know sooner than later?’ Yeah.
“But you have to be able to deal with uncertainty or ambiguity in this business, whether you’re a player, whether you’re a coach, and deal with it well. So I think our players get that, understand that. I think they’ll be fine.”
And it should certainly come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the guy the past decade.
But if history proves correct, Favre’s wishy-washy comments to Leno mean the old man is coming back. Lord Favre made similar remarks to David Letterman during an appearance on his show in April 2008, and we all know what happened after that.
For now, though, Favre is in his element. He’s again basking in the glow of the sporting world spotlight. Everyone is hanging on his every last word and legions of Queens fans (and players, right Jared?) are humiliating themselves to keep him in Minnesota.
Ain’t no way homeboy puts an end to this anytime soon.
So while I’m sure Favre already knows he wants to come back and give ‘er another go in the NFC North, he’s content again to let Tractor Watch 2010 continue another five months while he tools around building fences and pulling tree stumps. Or whatever you do in Bumfuck, Mississippi.
This while Chilly, Hagnar and the rest of the “Viking Nation” sit back and bite their collective nails.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
