Cullen Jenkins Lost For The Season
Green Bay Packers starting defensive end, and seemingly the only person on the Packers roster who can pressure the quarterback not named Aaron Kampman, Cullen Jenkins went on IR today.
What does this mean?
Well, the Packers are in a word, fucked.
OK, maybe that’s jumping to conclusions a little too soon. However, the news means Jenkins won’t be back for the remainder of the year due to a torn pectoral muscle that occurred in Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. This is the same injury that sent Dolphins running back Ricky Williams to IR last year, in his first game back from a drug suspension.
This also means Mike Montgomery or Jason Hunter are candidates to start opposite Kampman on the defensive line, and that offenses will probably shift their pass protection schemes even more towards Kampman, who has four sacks through the first four games of the season.
While it’s never good to lose a starter, it hurts even more losing one on a defensive line that has looked like shit for much of the season. Forget the pass rush for a second. The Packers have given up 631 yards on the ground through the first four weeks of the season. Opposing running backs are averaging a gaudy 5.2 yards per carry.
Guess where that ranks the Packers in rushing defense? Twenty sixth out of 32 teams in the NFL. Only such notable defensive powerhouses as the Houston Texans, Cincinnati Bungholes, St. Louis Rams, Kansas Shitty Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions are worse.
Those teams have a combined two wins…
